I'm loving this game. However, I'd like to get cash fast so I can start investing in properties, including safehouses. Anyone got any quick tips for doing things that make good money. I don't want to keep progressing the main story missions, but hacking a cab or an ambulance around town just don't pay off for the time invested.

Sad

the best way is to buy assets such as the malibu, and do the missions. THey then generate revnue which stores up and you can collect as often as you like!

The vigilante missions pay off extremely well, you can easily garner more than 100 000$ in half an hour. Helps if you have the Rhino or Hunter, but it's possible with a police car or a SWAT van as well.

Timber how does it play on your system? Even at 1024x768 (GF4) the graphics aren't very good on mine (like they're a couple generations old). The cars don't handle well, the scenery is grainy even at that res. I played last night for a while and then switched over to Mafia... there's seems to be no comparison, Mafia is 10 times the game that GTA is... but everyone seems to think GTA is great. I must be missing something.

Are there any setup tricks that improve the way the game looks and plays, or am I just being too picky?

yeh you can turn some of the flashy options of (the tracks thing etc.) Also are your video drivers up-to-date? That is a big help with this game.

It plays fine on my Xbox. No worries, and everythings in big beautiful 27-inch color. Long live console games, especially where keyboard/mouse combinations provide an inferior interface (like driving games and third-person view action shooters, both of which are in GTA). Now for aiming guns, like the assault rifle mission I'm struggling with, it would certainly be nice to have a mouse.

Anyone know how I purchase more ammo? Do I have to buy the dang gun again?

That is weird. I played those games in reverse order and felt that mafia was a very poor copy of vice city. I will give that the graphics look nicer in mafia. It was too tedious to finish for me.
It is a direct copy of the game with a different background.
But vice city was made by artists. And it has hours of radio.

MAfia is not bad but its not as balanced or entertaining.

I definitely like console type controls for third person games (Tomb Raider comes to mind), I prefer PC's for driving games... force feedback wheel and stick are a lot better than console controls for that, although you can probably get them for consoles these days too.

Digging around on the net it seems most people think VC is on par with Mafia (worse graphics but fun to play), which means it should be a kick butt game, I'm going to have to give it another chance, maybe some driver updates will help.

Mafia better than Vice City. I disagree but I can't really say that since I've only played Vice City once.....for 20 seconds.
