Many people have been talking about graphics latley while graphics may be getting better its still about the gameplay to me. I was watching g4 and they said the gta : vice city coming out on xbox will be better because the graphics will be better i find this terribly bad so i made this poll:

I am all about the gameplay-good example is BG. Graphics isn`t that good but you can play it over and over-if you like it that is. But i have a friend whos says"that sucks. Graphics is soooo lame"...he thinks that all in the game must be graphics...

Graphics as well as sound and music enhances the gameplay. They're all necessary components to make a really good game. Unfortunately game developers have sometimes spent more on the graphics than the actual content of the game. After a while you've 'grown tired' of the graphics, it doesn't impress you anymore, and then the game you've bought better have some actual gameplay or you've been ripped off. But on the other hand, if graphics were unimportant we would all be playing text-based games right now.

Be real: when Black&White came out we were all OOOOHHHHH when medal of honor came out we were all AAAAAHAHHHHHH when unreal 2 came out we were all OOOOOWWWWW when ....... you get the picture. Graphics are supportive, great gameplay is paramount, music should ALWAYS be 100%. Good music is a requirement. A game will end up in the trashbin if it doesn't have good music... Great topic cloud!
As we are getting closer and closer to photo-realistic graphics, developers are pushing the consoles harder and harder. Take the PS2 for example. It's nearly 3 years old and some how the graphics are getting better and better as the years go by; compare MGS2 with the upcoming MGS3, or GT3 with GT4. It's mind boggling to think what the games for next generation of consoles are going to look like! However, graphics are also ruining (well not exactly ruin, but you know what I mean) the games idustry. Far too many developers are spending too much time on graphics, rather than on gameplay, music, lastability and most important, making the game fun! Too me, a good game should have a balance between graphics, gameplay and music/sound. Even though graphics don't make a game, they certainly open up many doors, gameplay wise. The perfect example of this is Super Mario 64. Who would of thought the transition from 2D to 3D would revolutionise the gaming industry forever. i still dont understand why the consoles are trying to compete with the PC's. by hyping their graphics as their major asset they are saying 'graphics are all important'. what this fails to take into account is that the consoles are far behind the PC graphics wise. the only reason i liked consoles in the first place was the varitiy of gameplay, and how much fun the games were. by becoming graphics 'whores' the consoles are going to shoot themselves in the foot as people can get Multifunctional pc's, with better graphics for not much more than the consoles. they ought to bring back the dedication to gameplay of the old days.

Gameplay.
I can still sit down and play really old games with fun gameplay, but I cannot go sit down and play games that were "remarkable" for their graphics back when they came out. Gameplay is what makes things timeless.

I think the graphics emphasis is because there's only so many different kinds of games that can be made... and they've pretty much all BEEN made already. If you think about it, virtually every new game coming out will have you thinking "Cool graphics, but the game is basically XXX with a new engine".
It's a heckuva lot easier to wrap a snazzy new graphics engine around an old game than to try to think up an entirely NEW game... so you get Platform games with new graphics, racing games with new graphics, sports games with new graphics, adventure games with new graphics, strategy games with new graphics, First Person Shooters with new graphics... BUT the games themselves aren't breaking any new ground. This is why I've mostly stopped playing FPS games... there hasn't been anything new in that genre for over 5 years, since Half Life came out. Mafia at first SEEMED new, but it was really just a mix of two old game types (FPS and racing). I have some hope that Half Life 2 and DOOM III might throw in some new elements, HL2's level of interactivity is super impressive, but only time will tell if it translates into a game that will make us rethink our definitions for the FPS genre. As for what I demand in a game... I demand a lot of BOTH Graphics AND Gameplay. [ 09-22-2003, 09:35 AM: Message edited by: Thoran ] |

I think graphics are somewhat important. For example the graphics in Thief, BG, IWD, M&M6 even MOO2 are fine. Yes many older games have graphics that are not great but they are good as they have to be. The rest comes down to sound, interface, story, and game play. These types of games are fun, I don't have to go out and by a new computer, or upgrade for every new game to meet the graphics specs. Lately instead of buying new games I have been downloading older free games from the net because they are fun and I don't have to worry about if my specs meet the requirements. Graphics have become a little over rated. Just produce a decent game with great game play.
