for soa, the best are probably

kensai to mage at lvl 9 - mage robes get rid of the no armour, good fighter, excellent mage

ranger to cleric at lvl 8 - reasonable fighter, access to both cleric and druid spells

fighter/mage/thief - staff of the magi allows you to sneak away after backstab and repeat until the enemy is dead... effective but somewhat boring

swashbuckler to fighter: ultimate tank... but not very interesting

strongholds:

fighter, monk, barbarian: de arnise keep
paladin: room in the order of the radiant heart
ranger: cabin in the umar hills
cleric: room in one of the temples
druid: druid grove near trademeet
wizard, sorcerer: planar sphere in the slums
thief: maevars guildhouse
bard: playhouse in the 5 flagons

if multi- or dual-classed (if both active) you get to chose which applicable stronghold you get. if you are a fighter/something else, you can get both the de´arnise hold and the other.

Kensai are really cool. Who cares if they cant wear armor? It is a little annoying, but they can do a lot of damage fast with the Kai ability.

i use the barbarian and i use him well. i went throught the game with crimson chain +5 and the fail of ages and 3 selectable swords. and i kicked a**. i had 4 attacks per round and my flail slowed the opponent. with my barbarian rage i couldnt be confused or held. the only problem was getting charmed. well choose wisely.

I did the Kensai dualed to Thief. I'm now in ToB and the character is overpowering. But I'm almost wishing I'd chosen something a little more challenging -- bard, druid, etc.

Next time...
