Man the AI truly is nothing it was cracked up to be. I am reminded of the Sims 2 when I see it. Is there anywhere it truly shines like in that movie we saw with the woman and her dog. I admit, so far I've only really interacted with wandering NPC's and shopkeepers but it doesn't seem so radiant at all. I watch conversations happen and interactions between people and I start to think I've seen better in Thief 3.

NPC's will say goodbye, then not even move, instead restarting the conversation with something totally stupid that just sounds silly after what they had just been talking about. Example:

"Hi, what's new with you?"
"Oh the fighters guild is recruiting blah blah blah"
"I've heard the same"
"So long"

*Goes to walk away then suddenly puases mid-action and stutters as the sound sequence kicks in again and a new convo. begins*

"Hi how are you doing?"
"I've heard that his prices are the lowest blah blah" (basically ignored the question)
*now a 5-second pause with no response*
"Goodbye"

*Walks away but this time for real*

:-/

You're absolutely right, the AI is kinda retarded. I was wondering why it took so long until someone would mention it.

hahaha, yeah, the radiant AI is nothing like they told us.

The only time I have seen an NPC act intelligantly is during my battles with the guards, when they will pick up the dead guards weapons and fight the guards.....

Oh...wait....I suppose that isn't very intelligent

It's a bit frustrating at times. I had to contact this personal servant or whatever for a thieves quest. The arrow says she's in the forest. I reach the arrow and find the servant dead. WTF!? When I asked people about her I get "She doesn't leave the castle at all, you can always find her there". Yeah.... Right....

AI programming is incredibly difficult. I'm not so annoyed by the conversation AI as by the combat AI. I've more than once seen NPCs run in between the enemy and my Silver Battle Axe...

Some interesting radiant AI moments:

I'm walking through the hills near Bruma and see an Imperial Hunter in a skirmish with another npc that i can't yet see. I run up to him with the intention of helping only to see that the person he's fighting is another imperial hunter. Undecided, i stand back for a moment to see how it's going to play out. The second one drops the first and turns towards me, sword in hand, only to be dropped by the unseen bandit's arrow - the bandit i'm assuming they were fighting in the first place. I drop the bandit and loot all three whilst moulding the whole scenario into a nice little RP moment for my character.

After a certain MQ battle in Bruma, i'm escorting a certain individual back to a certain imperial city and wondering why a person of certain value might only be given a solitary escort for a mission of certain importance. (Poor MQ storyline - i'm still shaking my head.) A short distance out of Bruma, we encounter the guard captain of Bravil (G.I. Jane!) being attacked by a wolf. We help her and discover that she's on her way back to Bravil. Given the situation, i knock up a quick story (given that she's only got one dialogue option) and she becomes the third member of the convoy. A little further past the first crossroads and we encounter a legion soldier doing his rounds and, whaddya know, with another quick plot advance the party is now four strong. At this point i'm wondering if any random peasants might show up but i'm also thinking that this is more like the kind of escort the emperor of an empire on the verge should be given. After a dozen or so skirmishes and a full 12 hours of game time, we finally arrive at the imperial city. G.I. Jane and the legion guard peeled off when their crossroads came but the whole time they were with us i'm sort of smiling at this little thing called radiant AI.

There's a few more examples that escape me at the moment, but in all seriousness, some of the random radiant moments are more enjoyable than the scripted, spoon-fed, child-level quests that have been thrown my way.

And then, some of them are not...

I've had to pay off a bounty because some idiot guard with a weapon that wouldn't effect the wraith I was fighting ran up and got in the way...literally kept running in circles around the wraith. Incidentally, you can hit them up to three times, provided you're in a fight with something else.

On the plus side, however, I like that the guards will defend me...there was one time, I stole something from the church in Cheydinhall...the wench of a church worker caught me and chased me out to the streets, intending to kill me...so the guard did the only thing in his moral code to do---he killed the wench! Clergy or no, start attacks in my town and you're going down...

I do like the way NPCs seem to have things to do, work to go to, and stuff. It makes it challenging though, to find people, which makes it more realistic at the same time of course. Though I agree that their conversations are stilted at best.

There is one thing that I find really silly, though I don't know if it's a radiant AI thing but silly nonetheless. If you have a horse, and you choose fast travel, the horse always comes with you. Which makes sense, since travelling by horse is faster than walking. And if you're in a city, and your horse is parked outside and you choose to fast travel somewhere else, it makes perfect sense that you would go get your horse on the way. Even if you're say, somewhere in the wilderness and your horse is parked at a city, you would probably swing by the city to get your horse first. But a few times I have left my horse at a city and walked somewhere into the wilderness. Then I'm done in the wilderness, and I fast-travel back to the city-gate (the city where I left my horse in the stable). And when I get there, I get the message that my horse is stabled at the city gate. So presumably, I walked back to the city, got my horse from the stable, and rode it five metres or so to the city gate. Silly

I find it very funny when I enter a tavern, everyone get up and walk to my direction and then stop right in front of me as if I'm somekind of a VIP.

Everytime I see two Foresters in the wilderness together, they're always attacking one another. Every single time.

Easy way to get a silver bow in the beginning though.
