As I recall all you have to do is have the stones in your possession. As for stronger weapons Yes there are stronger bows and swords. Eagle Bow is wonderful.
I suppose it just depends on what you want and run across.

actually, spiderbane is very close to the top because fo free action. There is twohander+3 which you will get from the "chess game" on the third level. On top of the tower you can find scimitar+2 (so that your fighter can use shield), that about covers it. If you want onehanded weapons+3, you'll have to kill Drizzt, which is an evil act. He has scimitar+3 and scimitar+3(AC-2), but the second one can only be used by a good character (not evil or neutral). He also has elven chain mail+4 which would allow your thief (not sure about pure thief) to use thieving skills and fighter/mage can cast while wearing it. But he is VERY HARD to kill. He hits for about 20-30 damage, has THAC0 0 and AC -10, 98% magic resistance and I think 92 hit points.

I finished the game with Spiderbane in hand, and had the flame tongue in my reserve spot. I alternated between the two.
