Quick question about taunting... I was trying to goad the guys in the council club to attack me so I wouldn't have the whole guards coming and repossessing my stolen property fuss, but they wouldn't take the bait - just worked their disposition down to 0 and told me repeatedly how pathetic I am . It there a way to be 'successful' at taunting, like with admiration? Do I need better speechcraft to make them attack me? It's hard to tell when you're successful because you WANT their disposition to drop lol . They did variously comment that I better have a sharp sword and such but nothing came of it.

Thanks for any help

It can take a LONNNNNNNNG time. Helps if your speachcraft is high, possibly your personality matters, too.

I've no idea if its co-incidence, but it sometimes seems to help if I 'change the subject' by admiring them, or even bribing 10 a couple of times before going back to taunting.

Do you EVER get a 'success' message? If so, its a matter of time till they start fighting, but some times it feels like you'll get carpal tunel hitting the 'persuassion/taunt' things over and over and over...

Aelia, I asked the same question here before and have since found out what works best. I do have a speechcraft of about 55 and 100 Personality but even at lower levels this worked.
The trick is to get their disposition really high first, by bribing or admiring. Then taunt, taunt, hope you're successful, watch the disposition drop and when it nears, say, 40, bribe/admire it all the way up again, then taunt some more. It does take a long while but it works.

If/When you get the "Goodbye" option, you've successfully provoked them into attacking. I'm not sure how many successful taunts that takes, but I'd wager anywhere from 4 to 6.

normally three, nanobyte, though it sometimes takes more. another thing to be careful of, dont let their affinity drop below, say, thirty, or they might say goodbye but not attack you, then never talk to you again.

Thanks for all the advice . I did actually get them to attack me (although the guys down the bottom of the council club seem to be working on a one-attacks-all-attack system even with taunt so I've left them be for now ). It took a lot of failures, although their disposition was 0 when they finally decided to attack - it started out at 25 (not too friendly, these cammona tong ) so maybe that makes a difference. I'll definitely try your system next time, Mel! Good for practicing my speechcraft anyway

oh, aelia, theres a better way to go about it...

first, go WAY downstairs to the place where theres just one chick. stand on the stairs when she greets you so she faces up, then walk around behind her. sneak until she cant see you. WHACK HER!!! critical damage (hopefully), and hold down your sneak as you continue to whack her. (if everyone crowds around, reload, its hard to take on all five when youre early on).

now, go WAY upstairs (nearly to the exit) and save, repeat the whole process with the lonely guy guarding the door. now, get a good jinkblade, or make one.

go to the middle level and wack the nearest guy then run backwards into the stair case that goes up (when you whack the dude you should have your back to the staircase). this way only two can stand there and hit you at a time. freeze em, switch to your most powerful weapon, and kill em. kill the last guy at your own leisure.

now, you've got that bounty right? leave the club and run straight out of balmora through the nearest doors out on the same side as the silt strider. don't get caught by guards. go to the fort nearby (accross the river to your left as you exit the city) and talk to the guy who told you to kill em all again. not only does he love you and almost have a (self-deleted-sexual-term)... he rewards you with stuff and takes away the bounty, not to mention spreads your fame around.

yeah, you dont have to kill the bartender, but i dont think it hurts you if you do either... hmmn, save before you kill him then go and see if the fort guy will forgive his bounty too or not...
