I decided to answer the guys question and have my character class chosen for me, so I am a spellsword. I'm not very far into the game of course, I've just finished exploring seyda neen and have gone to Balmora.

First question:
Could I have taken the expensive platter behind the desk in seyda neen? Should I have taken it before or after I pick up the prisoner release papers?

Second question:
I arrived in Balmora, decided to join the fighters guild, mage's guild and theives guild. I was sent to get a diamond from the alchemist as part of the thieves guild job, which I did and everything went well, I didn't get caught. Gave the mushrooms to ajira in the mages guild and then was sent to kill some cave rats in some woman's house for the fighters guild. I killed one rat (got surprised and the rat nearly killed me!) anyway I decided to go buy a bed at the club place and rest up before killing the other two rats. Whilst I was resting I was awakened by a loud noise and then attacked by an assassin from the Dark Brotherhood! I spoke to a guard about it and the guard said to stay away from him, that I must have angered someone pretty badly to have an assassin from the dark brotherhood after me. Guard said he would report the matter. I had no trouble killing the assassin, but my question is: Is this part of the main quest? Is it supposed to happen and what on earth could I have done to be marked for assination? lol What I described above is all that I have done so far, so I can't think why somone would want to have me killed over those 3 things?

Also, the dark brotherhoods armor is worth a lot of money and also offers better protection then anything I can afford at the moment. Is it ok to wear the armor or should I sell it and buy the best I can afford with the money?

The assassins are part of the Tribunal quest. You have done nothing wrong.
If you haven't got Tribunal installed i don't know what is wrong.
As fare as I remember it is no problem to wear/keep the assassins eq.

The only armour you should never wear is ordinator's armour (temple guys, they have shiny armour and plumed helmets). They will hate you forever if you do.

I'm not sure what platter you mean, but if it was in the room with the release papers, then you probably would have been caught stealing by the guards. They don't appreciate things like that

Beware of those assassins, you might have gotten away with this one, but they'll be back. They'll team up on you in the future, and they'll be tougher once you grow stronger. So ALWAYS make sure you have a few "restore health" potions on you. They'll attack when you go to sleep.

Thank you Jaros and Aelia

I bought morrowind game of the year edition for $30 on tuesday so I do have have tribunal and bloodmoon installed It's good to know the assassination attempt is part of a quest lol I was really puzzling over that one!

Aelia: I did mean the platter where you get the release papers. I read a post where someone stated you could take that platter and sell it, but I didn't know how it could be done without getting caught as the guard and the grey haired guy are standing right there lol

I also read that you could get a quest from the grey haired guy to go find the tax collector whom is missing, but no conversation menu's ever come up about that, is this something that you get offered to do at a later time or have I been misled? lol

Thanks for the tip Johnny.

I was wondering...if I decided to make my own custom class, would taking restoration as a major skill be worth bother?

Next time you play, when the first menu pops up, select 'data files' instead of play. This leads to a menu where you can disable tribunal until your character is advanced enough to solve the problem of the dark Brotherhood assasins. Unless they come in a really scaled back version [maybe based on your characters level], I wouldn't want to have to face them at the begining of the game.

The tax collector thing... it may be that you have to wander around outside town till you find his body before the subject comes up. Then you are told to report the death to the grey haired man, and he gives you a quest to find and kill the murderer.

I wouldn't try to steal anything in the same room with ol' grey hair and the guard, but you can take pretty much everything else in the building for a little extra cash.

I like to get a bow, arrows, and a sword as soon as possible. You'll find that a lot of your opponents in this game do not have much of a ranged attack, and its often very nice to be able to take them out from a distance.

You can practice shooting mudcrabs and the like outside town for some easy marksmanship spell boosts.

You could have taken it, however you would have needed to be a little clever about it. AFAIK You can't pick anything up before the release papers.

Its only the bodyarmor (what is the word) you should keep your hands of, helmet, gauntles(sp?), etc is no problem.

How to steal limeware platter.

POTENTIAL SPOILER

Immediately after getting the release papers, go over to platter and take it (spacebar), but quickly - before the guard arrives - go into inventory mode and drop it.

If you're quick enough, the guard will just say "don't do that after you're released" and "goodbye" should be your only dialogue option. It is now safe to pick up the platter and leave.

There's no profit in taking this after you're released, as they will fine you unless you manage to not get caught.
