Legolas, Liliara, Dutka, Talthyr, Prime2U, Lucre, Sit Regin, Sir Byronas and Dundee

I have to say that as a first time DM, I've made quite some mistakes and learnt many things along the way. I am still having trouble keep everyone's interest up. Do not get me wrong, this is a common challenge that every DM as well as his players must overcome. I am still working on many things, and trying to find ways to improve. (and ways to deal with unexpected plot twists) you know it takes time, and effort. I'd just like to hear some suggestions from you, about the pace that the game flows...

Should we speed up at certain place? Did I take care too much of your roleplaying? Did I provide too little details thus create confusion? What needs of your characters have not been acheived so far? Does the combat last too long? Are you interested in combat scenes more than other roleplayings? Is items one of your great interest? What suggestions would you give me?

please tell me three things that I did not do well

thank you for taking the time reading this (and replying).

Well, I have no major complaints so far, and the campaign is moving along quite fine. Some comments though, there has been a fair bit of contradictions so far, nothing major, but it does affect the flow. I am still laughing over the contradiction where Gregor appears, then suddenly disappears( twice in fact), I have this cute visual imagey where there is some hidden rewind button and zut-zut, he is in! He is out! Heh.

The following is just my opinion and can be ignored, but I was a little disappointed when I could not finish my speech to Lucre. I had a plan and was hoping I could give the details when all of a sudden we had to fight. Oh, which brings to another point, are we allowed to dictate what happens to the enemies? Because this has also led to some contradictions where the fighters decapitate the enemy, then it suddenly does not become the case. No biggie, but it does spoil the flow.

OK, two things to note:

first of all, Gregor is, I am sorry, a major NPC in this campaign. no more details will be given so you should not give him personality and appearances. it is ok to say you find a servant in the dark room, but it is not OK to say you found the lord himself. the man is a fighter that controls 3000 crown guards, who personaly ended the wars with the Nightstalkers... how can he be trapped like a whimp?

second. you are free to dectates what an emeny does as long as your action makes sense

always remember your enemy is not stupid (exludes cases such as goblins, orcs, and ogres etc) a move you enticipate will most likely be thought of by your enemy, especially when you are at such a low (relatively say) level. don't expect you can "cut down one enemy, then back hand cut another in half..." it won't happen. and lets not say those enemies that you are fighting against are almost the same level with you.

and an example from Lucre about how he dealt with the mage. he cut the mage's necklace, and that turns off the mage's power... well, nope. lets not forget any mage can cast web spell, without any power source. and IF that necklace is his power resource, woudl you think he'd wear it out so boldly? he'd go to great length to hide it make sense here?

as to contradiction itself, I'll learn to do something about it

for example, it might be helpful if I tell you:
the masked leader is immune to pain.

then leave the roleplay to yourself completely. this way, I dont have to insist too much control on the your character.

but one thing bare in mind, unless you have a brilliant roleplay idea, just give your choice/action, instead of result. Dundee, you had done a great job on this so far.

and what is a great roleplay idea? it is up to you to find the balance as where to draw the line. I mostly welcome ANY attempt at roleplaying.

Sorry about that, but you haven't really told me anything about ANY NPC's except all that i read from the post, i only thought Gregor Wolfsheim was some big nob who just made a deal with some of those peoples who attacked. I think a little more info on all of the NPC's but without giving away any secrets. I have a suggestion as well, instead of sying nu-uh that cant happen you could just make it so the story carried on by them running away, happening to be some wight/monster thingy, casting improved invisibility etc. O and you world creation is great

Lucre, thank you. your suggestion is great and VERY true. but sadly, not all situations can be adopted that way. I think I need to try harder, maybe that will help.

as you know, there are still much more to learn, what is acceptable, what is not, I need to find balances of my own. I apologize for the "un-fun" part I created. I will keep up my part of the work have no doubt

a suggestion to your players though

try ask questions

when you go into a dark room try "I search for any torchs or anything that can provide light. I search for abnormal signs of any possible encounters, I am on guard and ready for an ambush. I search for noises..."

such as this. and if you met a man, try ask "how tall is this man? have I met him before? can I find something odd about him? I will examine his hand from a distance, looking for rings and other things that can possibly reveal his identity..."

things like this would be good for us all
