Pretty much. Make your own campaigns, play em and such. I'm going to start a campaign, although being my first online one, its going to be a bit different.

It's a forum where you play roleplaying games.
There are roughly two kinds of thread here, those which are adventures by a limited group of players and those that are open to all. If you want to join in a 'closed' game you should E-mail or PM the one who started the thread or the one acting as DM (usually one and the same) for permission to play along. In an open thread you can just start posting. In a closed threads the names of the players are usually easy to spot, so there won't be much trouble telling them apart.

Playing goes per post, the DM posts a situation and you can react to that, as can other players. After a while the DM will continue the story.
Some games follow strict DND rules, but most are more easy going. Things just work without rolling dice. This gives you more freedom and speeds up the game, and is often more fun.

Most of the games follow the following rules:
You should not be a super character, but a normal, mortal being
You should post in character, not everything you do has to be considered well or benefit the party. Your character's goals are what matter in determining your actions
You cannot die unless you take absurd chances
You should not control other players' actions.

The exact rules differ from game to game, of course.

A third type of thread is the clan thread. They can be considered closed threads, and a requirement for playing along is joining the clan. That won't be too hard in most cases

Hope this helps!

You don't need a copy of the rules, just post what your character is doing. Or, if you ARE playing by the rules, just post what you WANT your character to do and the DM will tell you if you can and if it works.

I forgot to add rule number one:
Have fun!

Welcome to the forum, Oz.
You are going to be a valuable addition to many threads of games!
Have fun!
By the way...most of my D&D knowledge comes from the Baulder's Gate Series...not strictly D&D, I know...but well enough. Plus...I like to write fictional Sci-Fi.
