I just got this game a month ago, and now am on chapter 3. However I still haven't figured out what gems do. I tried to look it up in online gameguides but none of it explaines the purpose. Can anyone help me?

Gems are mostly just treasure, to sell. Some have uses, for example rogue stones, beljuril, diamond, but just keep one of each. If you play ToB others will be useful as well. But most just sell.

Rogue Stones can get u to a certain place in the game (see twisted rune threads), and some gems can upgrade items in TOB (apparently- i havent got TOB yet), But other than that sell them for a whole lot of money!!

That's why I always start the game as a Fighter of some sort, though with my Mage in a secondary role (Multiplayer rules!) Then you can get the D'Anise hold with its way-cool library. I once collected every SPELL in the game, there, and have it on Save game, so that any time I want a particular spell, I just go there
