Staff of Magi : when ?

I'm soloing a sorcerer and i'am almost lvl 13

I tried to fight for the Staff of Magi, but i died in a round.

When should i try it again ? What is the level to fight those wizards and get the Staff ? When will i be ready ?

There are some wands and scrolls (and an amulet) which will make your battle easier for you. The are of course SPOILERS. Someone has posted a very early solo mage acquisition of that staff. The solo mage's name was Elmonster, should you want to look for his account, which contains spoilers.

i haven't tried this myself, but i'm guessing using a protection from undead and protection from magic scrolls would make the fight a peace of cake, even at very early levels.

The staff is bugged

it does not protect from evil and it dispels any actual protection from evil if you click on it.

Ha! I found that fight REALLY hard. Probably the hardest fight in the game. And that was with almost full xp for a 6 person party. O doubt that you will be able to do it. I apologise if you take this offencively but I was getting a whole load of sh*t from my freinds on MSN and they think it is funny.
Summon really powerful creatures then go after the female mage first, steal her Staff of the Magi and use it on the other guys. Leave fast. Best you can do mate.
