How do you get a character to use the special abilities of magic items like the Ring of the Ram or Daystar?

After equipping the item, you should see an icon that looks like some sort of pouch on your action bar. Click there and another row of icons will appear; these icons will be the special abilities of items.

Thanks Azred, I've played through almost all of Chapter 3 without using any of my items abilities! Any suggestion on how to complete Anomen's Quest if his father won't speak to you?

When you say Cor Delryn won't speak to you, do you mean he won't start any conversation thread with anyone (including Anomen) or he won't say anything to you after he's spoken with Anomen?
