I love every character in BG2. Sure, they have their bad points, however these bad points are a result of their pasts: (Warning! Rampant Spoilers for some Romances here)

Jaheira:
She's a strong woman, very strong. She tries to stay balanced. She's great at fighting, and tends to accept life on it's terms, or at least tries. However, she can't accept everything right away, like Khalid's death. She has dreams of Khalid. Like someone once said, dreams are the gateway into the unconcsience. Well, if they are, then Jaheira's dreams are pointing toward something. She can't accept his death, it's too hard on her, one of the hardest things on her. Note that when she's held hostage, and if your character is a male and offers himself as a hostage, she gets furious. "No! Not again!" is what she says when you get shot. The point is that there are some things that even she cannot accept, even if she wants to.

Keldorn:
This guy has had an almost full life. As we all know, the older you get, the more set in your ways you get. He may hate Viconia, because he sees her as a possible threat to all that's evil. However, he's also set in his ways, he HAS seen evil, enough to last 2 lifetimes possibily. He may feel like it's experience talking, and for all we know, it may actually be experience talking. He can't help the way he feels because he's been feeling it too long, the best he can do is try to change, and that gets harder the older you get.

Viconia:
Granted Viconia can be mean. However, Viconia is a product of Drow Society. She sort of reminds me of Drizzt's dad, Zaknafien. She didn't like what she saw in her society, and questioned it, but didn't quite have the strength to pull away from it. And yea, she may have accepted Shar as her new goddess, but everyone needs something to believe in. She's cynical, and that's natural. Look at her past, much like the other characters. Someone she totally trusted, a farmer, tricked her. He tortured her, with his friends helping, and buried her alive. Who wouldn't be cynical after something like that happened?

Aerie:
I can go over a lot with Aerie. People call her a whiner. Someone even noted that even if Jaheira whines as well, at least she tries to change life. However, Jaheira and Aerie have two different pains, even if they both have loss in common. Jaheira can get over her pain by falling in love. Aerie can too, but that's not so obvious at first. Besides that, Aerie can't do anything about her wings. (Although I haven't done TOB with her romance just yet.) They're gone, permeneantly, for all she knows. Jaheira, unlike Aerie, has hope. She can fall in love again, that feeling she had, that was so precious, is NOT gone forever. Aerie's feeling of flying is gone forever, because let's face it, we can feel like we're flying, but we can never experience it the way she did. Just feeling isn't enough, doing is what makes it better, ACTING it out. Her only real hope is to fall in love, and find something that's more precious to her than flying. Love, and battling evil.

Minsc:
Well frankly, Minsc is to lovable, IMHO, to actually need to defend. I don't know anyone who hates Minsc.

Valygar:
Granted he's a bit prejudiced towards wizards. However, all magic has ever bought him is pain. For instance, his mother turned his dad into a lich, then she turned herself into one. That's painful for him, magic did two bad things to him, including the fact that he ended up killing them because of that same magic that transformed him. Add onto the fact that he's related to an evil sorceror who preys on family members. However, Valygar is young. He ends up coming to an epiphany about Lavok, did he truly redeem himself? Valygar is begginning to change.

Korgan:
Kogan is a little hard to defend. He can be extremely mean sometimes. However, he may be kind of like Viconia, in that he's a product of both his past AND society. Hell, if you think about it, all of the NPC's personalities are a product of their pasts.

Mazzy:
Mazzy has seen a lot of ill feeling toward her race. Halflings are always thought of as weak because they're so small. This is what drives her to be strong, and to be a knight. She wants to prove people wrong, because people are wrong. They make too many generalizations that aren't neccessarily true or false.

Cernd:
Cernd is like any preist or nun, he felt a calling. It's hard to deny that. At least he tried to make amends for what he did to his wife.

Edwin:
Edwin is a product of spoiled upbringing. Maybe he'll change ;C)

Nalia:
Nalia's past unfolded something. Her mother helped people a lot. This would explain Nalia's want to help people, her mother did it, and it's not only a good way to honor her mother's memory, but it's a good way to live life too. At least she has chosen a way to live life, instead of just accepting it as the way it is.

Ok, so I didn't cover ALL of the NPC's.

Great overview, Jerr

Useful for people like me who haven't even taken half the NPC's out there.

Excellent overview Jerr!
I think I know to whom you are refering at Aerie's analysis.
I cannot stand her!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I shall have to try to romance her to see for myself.
Sigh!I have gone up to the point where "she feels like collapsing here and dying".
I hope she gets better as you said!

Lol!

Check out this picture I found:

Also, now that someone mentioned Jaheira and Aerie fighting, legitimate question, if you get Jaheira, Aeria, and Viconia in the same group together, will they fight in one big fight at once?

Unfortunately they won't get into one big fight.Viconia will say some excellent remarks on Aerie whenever Jaheira was supposed to speak. So it is mainly between Viconia and the other two.
BTW nice picture!
