Not really, it is just a off-plot side quest that lets you kill more things. As for killing him, make use of your cleric and have he/she turn undead, cast anti-undead spells like sunray/false dawn, spells like bolt of glory will also work. And have your fighters hack away with high enchantment weapons while your mage have true seeing on and cast breach to counter the lich's protective spells.

Paladin's turn undead lvl are lower than clerics, in your case, you are better off hacking and slashing.

My only cleric is Aerie and she is multiclass.Does it lower her ability to turn undead?

Multiclass itself restrict the level achievable under exp cap, lower level means lower turn undead ability.
