Elves get a +1 THAC0/Damage bonus with the Bow and Long Sword.
Halflings get a +1 THAC0/Damage bonus with the Sling.
Dwarves get a +1 THAC0/Damage bonus with Diddly P. Squat.

Is it me, or isn't the image of a Dwarf giving throat to a vicios war-cry and weilding his Axe (or Warhammer, as the case may be) kind of, well, a classic archetype? Shouldn't Dwarves recieve a bonus with the very weapons that are just as 'particular' to their race as Bows are for Elves?

People in BG1 play Dwarves because they can get the Tome of DEX. to improve their AC by 'fixing' the Dexterity penalty, but more importantly because they can get the Tome of CON so their main character is ALWAYS regenerating his lost hitpoints, which is VERY nice. But then they hit BG2 and it turns out it's possible to get a Ring of Regeneration almost right off the bat! So now, everything that made their character cool is now summed up in a ring, which can be passed from character to character. No wonder so many folks play Elves instead. Okay, so Dwarves have some good Saving Throws. And?

Yes, but dwarves have great beards, and they make fantastic catapult-based ammunition.

Hey, um, that's 2nd edition AD&D rules. That's just the way it is, and the way it has been for about 15 years. It has nothing to do with Baldur's Gate. Dwarves also have increased bonuses against poisons and giants, and can detect all kinds of stuff underground, like new construction, slanting passages, etc. Just the way it is, man, sorry.

You remember that! I just re-bumped it on GameBanshee. I have to get my wife to read it. She'll probably look at me peculiarly, but it will be worth it.

I'd link to it here, but that would be rather tasteless, linking to another board's thread. These are both excellent boards. Perhaps we could revive the scholarly consideration of airborne dwarves, halflings, and gnomes on Ironworks.

Dwarves also get bonuses to hit orcs, 1/2 orcs, and other goblin kin, but I don't think this was implemented in the game...

And yes the dwarf-tossing thread was one of my favorites, it had me rolling on the floor of my office, I had to leave the room several times a page so that I could laugh without people looking at me funny

Who cares? Gnomes are easy ammo compared to dwarves. An angry dwarf with a big battle axe is a lot more dangerous than a gnome with a shortsword. Gnomes are the easiest to throw manually, IMO. Not as big and dangerous as dwarves and a great deal lighter than both dwarves and halflings.

I read the thread, and I was ROFL.

I can't believe that no one has mentioned here or in the other thread Gimly the dwarf's quote from LOTR1: "Nobody throws dwarves!"

Best line in the movie, and it shows that the writers of the film really knew fantasy very well. The subject of "dwarf throwers" (versus "dwarven throwers") has been around for a long time, and has been the catalyst for the creation of a lot of humorous material, as evidenced by that thread.

A little off topic, but was I the only one who thought the LOTR movie was a lot better D&D film than the stupid one that bore that name?
