Is the Bishop unable to learn the remove curse spell? I have the spellbook for it but it says "This character cannot learn this spell at this time". I've got the required class level and magical skills so I don't see why not.
Also, can rangers and ninja perform critical hits in melee as well as ranged? Their class description doesn't make it clear if their ranged critical hits is on top of melee critical or as a replacement for it. |

Far as I know, your Bishop should be able to learn any spell, so long as the requirements are met. Of course, for this particular spell, it's not too big a deal, since Bishops have the innate ability to uncurse anyway. Still, learning the spell will add points, and that's always nice. Someone else may be able to figure out why you can't read the book.
Ninja can get crits in melee combat. Rangers can only get crits on ranged attacks (unless they have a melee weapon with a crit hit chance). |

There are a couple of requirements you character needs in order to learn a spell, (1) a certain number of levels and (2) the required number of skill points. This is explained in detail at http://wiz8.web1000.com/perko.html (worth a read).
In this case, Remove Curse is a level 4 spell. As a Bishop (I'm assuming you have not changed professions at some stage), your Bishop needs to reach Character Level 8 to meet the first condition, and have 45 skill points. To work out the skill points, for this spell, take either the Wizardry or Divinity skill (whichever is highest), and add 10% of the Divine skill, if this equals or exceeds 45, you've met the second condition. The message you're getting means that your chaaracter has not met both conditions. Check out this link too.

Very likely! Lets say your character was a Psionic for the first 3 levels before changing to a Bishop. Now at Character Level 10, the character has only 7 levels in either a Wizardry or Divinity profession, but needs 8 before being able to learn the spell. There's your answer.
Use the Wiz8SpellAbility spreadsheet (signature below), enter in your character's stats, then go to the [Availability] sheet, and look for the "Remove Curse" spell, it will tell you what is still needed. [ 11-24-2003, 08:02 PM: Message edited by: Wolfie ]

Well, its too late for this party, but in general: When you want a bishop, its normally not a good idea to give him some levels as a pure spellcaster. You learn the spells later - you will be level ~27 instead of level ~24 when you reach your full power. And i think the 'power' of your attack spells will be lower, so it will be more difficult to rip through enemy resistances.
You might give him one level of mage if you want a quick start (i never did, for role-playing reasons). Since many of the powerful early attack spellös are mage spells, you won't loose much in this case. |

I just discovered something in my most recent game that makes the Remove Curse spell useful for even a Bishop. I found that my Bishop could let my Ninja remove the Cane of Corpus at a much earlier level by using the "Remove Curse" spell than by using the innate "Uncurse Item" ability.

Oh, yeah, about the criticals:
I do believe my Faerie Ninja has scored Criticals with the Cane of Corpus, but for my Ranger, I've never seen a Critical in close combat. Also, for the Ranger, it is the Ranged Combat skill that determines the frequency of Criticals, so it makes sense that it is Ranged Criticals only.

About the Uncurse Items ability:
The ability itself is definitly not as powerful as the spell (at higher power-levels). My bishop (lvl 18) has both but he only can remove some higher-level cursed weapons with the spell. (Of course, the depending spellbook (divine I think) has to be devoloped)

I think that like all of the other special abilities remove curse should be level dependant, but I have never tested it yet, always just used the spell so as to take up divine magic, and divinity skills.
