Hey, who of you is carrying around vi? Well, I do, and she's got Excaliber, but the bad-initiave-factor is beginning to annoy me. She's trained in Swords now, but I could as well change to polearms or something else, so I'm asking... what are YOUR giving her? I mean, I don't have the Avenger, but almost every other cool weapon, so I'm pretty flexible. It's gotta be non-cursed, though, because I need her in ranged combat... I'd appreciate any answer

Cheers
Philipp

I always give Vi a polearm. To start off with, I buy the Lance for her from Antone and then switch to either Mystic or Dread spear when I find them.

Vi uses polearms in most parties I have tried (the bonus). The polearms aren't as good as the swords but they do have reach. But if swords are the game: I also recommend Fang and especially the Ivory Blade as opposed to Excaliber, but you have to start out with that end in mine. That is, build up sword early. And if you want shield or double weapons, you may have to choose between them. Vi got pretty good when I did that, it was worth it.

Oh yeah, Ivory Blade sounds great, I'm just BOUND to have a Dragon Kite somewhere... or maybe another shield? I'll check that out, good idea. Or do you think I should build up 2-hands? She's got 0 now (well, in shields as well), but probably it's worth a try... naaah, there's no good one except the Enchanted Wakizashi, but my Samurai is already using one, so I guess I'll try the shield

You can get Diamond Eyes as a good second weapon relatively early, early mid-game, maybe lev 13, in the Mountain Wilderness hill. Depends on your party strength, definitely need Soul Shield IMO. And some luck on who you meet along the way. Of course, you will need to train for mace and flail. I don't recommend dagger for Vi although she can handle it. Shield is always a good alternative. Lords are better at dualing two weapons with their bonus.

Edit: Pyrates - thinking about this, I realize that having Excaliber means you are already well along. Go for the shield skill at this point. You would have to train for dual weapons AND the new weapon category.

Zig, thanks for your comment, I'll think about this. I'm at the end of the game with a level 32 party and just playing around, having the Diamond eyes in a secure chest guarded by Antone Rapax So, it's just a matter of what-I-want-to-try, and I just can't get myself to finish the game...

Cheers

You really do have some alternatives then! My guess is you are hanging around AP to get that high a lev. A prob there is that there a few battles with many X points. I wonder if you go up in combat skills when you, say, fight Juggernauts who are lev 11 and you are 32? Sometimes you don't get much of a reward if they are too easy. I wonder how that works?

*G* Right you are I'm just waiting to see the famed AmeGazer once...

About the Juggernauts, the EXACT thing happened to me (yes, even with juggernauts). I took a time off from AP and walked to Trynton. I met some Juggernauts on the way, which of course were easily defeated, but after that two skills (can't remember exactly which) went up.

I think it works about this: Every check made has a difficulty. You get some kind of skill-bound experience, the more difficult the check, the more you get. If one of your skills collected enough of this, it goes up and the counter is set back to 0. The higher you skill is, the more of this "experience" you need to make it go up again... So, probably, instead of hitting a Djinn of the Sun twice you could hit a juggernaut 300 times (or, more likely, hit 300 juggernauts) and your sword skill would go from 2 to 3...

From what I have seen with the alchemy skill and merging potions, the relation is like "two checks of difficulty 25 are worth one check of difficulty 50" (i.e. proportional), but I'm not 100% on this...

Cheers

i've seen a number of posts to this effect, but i cant remember from who. but basically, the idea was to run the party at it's most difficult, and put out front a single fighter who will swing and swing and swing and swing, while the rest of the party keeps their opponents healed. that way, they can learn the most possible from a single combat.

the general consensus seems to be that learning is based on your two controlling stats (str and dex, for example) compared to your skill level (sword, for example). but no one has mentioned opponent level as a controlling factor... of course, since we're forced to reverse engineer to figure it out, it would be hard to be certain! For Vi I always use the dread spear you can by from Bela, which alo hexes the opponents.
