Help in Sea Caves? (spoilers, possibly maybe)

Hello all,
My first ever party (a group of mad suckage to be sure) is wandering around in the sea caves. We cannot seem to get to where we want to go. I've found the plank thingy at the boat and, because it has a hook on the end in the picture I thought it would be the perfect thing to lever my party up into the room with the horizontal stick. Unfortunately it keeps telling me that I need a specific item here. Do I just need to jigger around with my postion below the horizontal stick whilst clicking madly? Or am I just barking up the wrong hole with the wrong item?

Sorry if this is a repeat topic. I searched for a long while on the list but couldn't find anything.

The plank is used elsewhere.

DeSoya, there is a place in a cave (through a narrow passage from the beach) where you notice an opening above you. You can throw the line and sinker up to a crag and then can climb to the most important area of the sea caves.
