what is the deal with the rapax away camp and the rapax king?

i realize that it's not critical to go there to finish the game, but i was wondering what is all that about as far as the plot/story is concerned. i also know that you find one of the umpanis and t'rangs there.

You bring about peace between the T'Rang and Umpani after who-knows-how-long a war between them.

You get to blow up the Savant's ship.

You get 1.2 mil total exp per person in party for doing all that.

As to the main story, it makes no difference whether you do the alliance or not, you still get the same endings.

The hint book says that if you Ascend without killing the Rapax king, then Trynton and all the Trynnies are destroyed. Is this true? I figured that I already ticked him off by freeing the prisoners in the first place, so I went ahead and offed His Serene Majesty.

Doesn't really matter. If you take one of the good endings, you just write the Trynnies back in, so to speak. Whether you killed the king or not.
