I'm no expert (having just started last week), but I can say that the exact same thing happened to me on my first try to get out of the monastery. I kind of took it as a cue that I should go back inside and fight a few more slimes/rats/seekers, etc. before coming out again. My specialist spellcaster was an alchemist, and I made sure to have him cast a spell in every battle until his points were exhausted. After making another circuit of the monastery levels (and resting after every fight, whether I needed to or not, in order to spawn more creatures), my alky was casting noxious fumes well enough that the crusher crabs weren't such a problem.
The only problem I remember running into was pestilent rats. No one in my party could cure disease, and I had to reload after my first encounter with them (not enough c.d. potions to go around . . .) |

Thing is the monsters in the Monastery seem to go up as well. So like you said...you run into things the can inflict nasty status effects to you, you cannot yet cure them. Plus as your chars go up you need to better armor and weapons to fight the no doubt stronger things outside and to the next area...or town I guess. Problem is I ran from the Crabs and killed the bandits...then as i was turning around at a dead end...all three of the crusher crabs had followed me to the dead end....Problem is my mage doesnt even have the hp to withstand them..usually do more then 12 damage to me per attack!I guess i have to reload or something.
Party lineup: Felpur samurai, ranger and ninja, rawulf priestess, hobbit bard, (of course) faerie mage. the mage as expected...doesnt go up much in ways of hp...and before its mentioned..she is at the very back |

If the critters just outside the monastery are too much, then restore to just before you left, and try again. Monsters are randomly generated the first time you enter a new area, and occasionally, you get the high end of the range. Levels 5-6 are where you should be on leaving for Arnika, so I suspect you just got a bad generation roll.

There were two areas I had enormous trouble with at first: stepping out of the Monestary for the first time (and trying to get to Arnika!), and the first time I entered the swamp (and prolly the second and third time too!). Both areas really taught me to reappraise my combat technique and tighten things up. Make sure you're always backed up against a wall or, even better, in a small crack or corner so they can only attack one or two at a time (lead 'em where you want 'em, at a distance). Never let them surround you, or death is imminent! Those crabs have extended attack, so can attack mid and back (I think) rank members if you're up close and personal, so one strategy is to stand back a few steps and use extended weapons like spears and halbards. I had 5 party members with ranged weapons at that stage, plus my mage was throwing everything she had at them. My fighter was using bezerk mode constantly.
Make sure you're using Armorplate if you have it - it really helps, as does Enchanted Blade, Bless, Haste and other enhancing spells. It swings the balance back in your favour, assuming you have them up and running early. Make sure everyone who can is wearing some decent armour as well - that Trynnie trader just outside the monestary can help you there. I tended to forget about that in the early stages. And if it still goes pear shaped, well... reload and try again! krok |

quote: Interesting! I have been complaining of LACK OF MONSTERS to kill and you are complaing of too hard fights. Well. Im not complaining of easy fights. My encounters were "hard fight - very bad". but the problem with my situation is that im in an awkward level such that I dont have the right spells yet and thus my casters just plain suck. If only I have MORE FAIR encounters, I would have leveled up properly to get the better spells and make use of those casters. At any rate, you are at level 5,6 and definitely, you would have to rely solely on the punching power of your fighters - casters dont get into the picture until they get level 4~5 spells. |

Just finished the game, and my overall take on difficulty is that it's quite steep for the first 15 levels, but tends to be too easy after that. I suspect getting the combat protection spells element/ soul shields is a major factor.

Im finding this goes on and on. I like that it is hard...but at times it is just ridiculous. My party of mostly lvl 10 and 11 just entered the mine map....after the swamp...and I cant get out of the first clearing. Wave after wave of dudes...you cant rest...seems like when you first enter a map, its brutal. I had the same problem in the swamp. I also think its because I am new and didnt level up correctly (esp. my Bishop and spell picks!!!!). But Dam n sometimes this game is hard....

The trick to beating things like those crabs is to disable them. Web, freeze, sleep. Focus your spell casters of defensive spells like those along with spells like enchanted blade, missile shield (note that this protects you from the long range plant attacks), armorplate, and magic shield.

quote: Arnika Road is one of the most difficult part of the game (relativly to your party) so don't dispair. To keep your mage alive "Guardian Angel" and the "Protect" command are the way to go at low levels. All monsters have strengths and weaknesses, the standard hack-and-slash technique from other CRPG won't work well in Wiz 8 against monsters with high AC/Damage absorption. Hit them with spells instead: The Insanity spell for example is really great against those Crabs and Juggernauts,...
