So what weapons should a mage/priest specialize in? (I know I should cast spells all the time to build up skills, but I don't do it every round and I eventually run out of mana and mana potions anyways)

My party consists of

Monk, Rogue, Priest, Mage, Ranger, & a Gadgeteer, with the magic guys in the back. (I didn't pick a fighter/bard because I have another party with them)

If it is just one, then I suggest you specialise in Staff&Wand. Why?

You will be able to obtain a decent staff from Antone in Arnika, and this will only be usable by pure spellcasters. That's a nice one.... Also, the Staff of doom is usable by everybody, but I don't know where to find it, and it is cursed with a -1 health regeneration.

On the other hand, since your spellcasters alway are in the second row, try throwing and sling, nothing special there, but at least they got something to do... Mainly howling around exhaustingly much Ammo, at least if you have a gadgeteer in addition.

Never forget your towel, cheers

Definitely use slings...you can use them when you are out of mana for spells, out of potions, etc. and can get a better sling-type weapon (wristrocket) from Crock in the swamp.

DO take advantage of the Staff that Antone will offer to make you if you talk to him about custom items, ask him about each one, bring him the ingredients, blah, blah, blah...it's cool!

Think about throwing some points here and there into Mace and Flail for your Priest/Bishop types because later in the game Antone's brother Ferro has a great mace/flail weapon that he'll make for you as well...you"ll want to be ready for it.

I'm doing the mace/flair for my priest just for that weapon that Ferro makes for you. While it may not be the best weapon in the game I think it will do just fine. Plus everytime I've gotten it no one had the skill high enough to do much with it.

I should mention that I'm running a 4 char party so I need my priest to get down and dirty especially since I also have a gadgeteer (along with a Fighter and Rogue). I figure this should be a hell of an interesting party to try....especially later on. As it is I'm having more fun with this than I did with my solo Dwarf Monk.

The Staff of Doom (very nice item) is in the cave behind the waterfall in the Mountain Wilderness. Until you're ready for that, the Ebon Staff is a good weapon for any priest or bishop.

The vampire chain isn't bad, either...or the Cat O' Nine Tails, for that matter.

Mage: Staff/Wand. Cool staffs later on in game. Extended reach
allows you to support party members in combat. Extended
melee weapons don't require heavy ammo to be effective.

Bishop: Mace/Flail. In early game, you can use a shield. It helps.
Plus you can use a bullwhip that gives you an extended range
attack for easy critters/out of mana times while using
your shield. Ferro makes you a cool weapon too.

I am on my second time around right now, I'm using the bullwhip with my fairy bishop to get ready for the vamp chain,

party:

Hobbit samuri
Human Ninja (did fairy last time, but I want him to also throw this time)
Mook Bard
Hobbit Gadgeteer
Mook Ranger
Fairy Bishop

Just tough because my ninja has to be in the front line, even though I want him to throw.
