Whan I enter the Bayjin Shallows, I start to drown and lose stamina. After the first battle, I'm dead...What am I missing?

Are you wearing your aqua lungs - they are in one of the huts in Bayjin (sounds like you are entering that way rather than from Mt Gigas) - they have to be equipped in either of the 2 slots that take rings /ankhs / amulets to be effective.
