I noticed in some situations I find myself fighting a monster that wants to ingage me with ranged attacks.

I have learned from some of the other post that I can manually move closer. Can this be done automatically? (i.e. If I have a group of only fighters equiped with just sword and shield. Would they just sit there and take the beating? or can I get them to run in there and fight automatically?)

I am at work at the moment contemplating what happened in the last 24 hours. I just got the game installed and working last night SO... the answer might be something I have not tried yet. Thank you in advance for any help in this matter.

well, if by "automatically" you mean do they "sense of their own accord" that they are too far away, without you doing anything at all about it? LOL!! nopers.

you gotta press a few buttons and move them by hand.

there's an icon in the lower right of a little guy. press it and a little window opens with 2 little guys in that: walking little guy and running little guy.

pick either one (using your own judgment on if you want to saunter or rush)

a bar opens in the screen saying "Run/Walk Pending" and it will sit there forever till you press the spacebar (or whatever keyboard command you have for starting the round).

oh btw, before you hit the spacebar to start the walk/run countdown, you can go thru everybody and set up their moves for that round, in case you have time left at the end of your move!

then stuff happens (yadda yadda, they fight, you fight, yadda yadda) till it it's your turn to Run/Walk and the bar turns bright blue.

don't waste time looking at it! start moving!

you can either use up the entire bar or stop it about halfway, so that you can still get in a hit or two.

and that's how you move in battle.
