I definately like the new forum. I remember some names from the W&W forum. Too bad I can't remember my old sign in name.
Anyway, I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on importing characters. I played W6 on a way older computer a long time ago. I played though most of W7 but never finished. Those games are long gone. I was thinking about buying them again and replaying both W6 & W7 before I start on W8. Or maybe play around with W8 while I grow a party though W6 & W7. However, is it worth it? I change all my characters about every 6-10 levels. Eventually all my characters know most of the spells or skills of every class. This seemed to be a slight problem when importing to W7 because I had gotten my guys up to were I wanted them and all of a sudden I had to start switching them again if I wanted to learn new skills that were just introduced. Therefore, I am wondering if it is worth bringing up a new party to import to W8. I liked doing that in the Eye of the Beholder series much more than starting a new party, but am not so sure with Wizardry. Any thoughts? Thanks for any advice. Regards. |

I tried importing a party and finally gave up on them after about 4 tries. My trouble was that I built my Wiz 7 characters into high level elite classes after switching roles many, many times. I think I had two or three characters that knew almost every spell. They even knew different spells from different spell books that did the same thing. When I imported I found that I had a Lord, Valkyrie, Monk, Fairie Ninja, Bishop and Ranger, all elite classes. When they imported, they lost a lot of their stats, so in stats they were no better off than a new lot. They did have an advantage in skill points, as long as they were usefull skill points.
I found that I could not advance in magic very fast. I was heavy on the fighter end and very low on the magic end. I tried changing a few of them back to basic roles, but I could not seem to get any magic going and often died because I had no area affect or cone type offensive spells. I even made it to level 10 characters through Arnika without the benefit of an Armorplate spell. I finally gave up and built a new party from scratch. I supose that If I had built up a few high level base classes in Wiz 7 I would be much better off, but that would be bad for Wiz 7. I will say that I miss some of the items that came accross. The diamond ring, the Ahnks of Might and the Stun rods were very kewl. All in all, I will stick with the new party. At least until I can go back to Wiz 7 and change classes a one more time to maximize what gets imported. Good Luck Knarfling

Thanks for the input. I had noticed that unlimited switching of classes back and forth was beneficial in individual games of W6 & W7, but that importing sort of created special problems.
In W8, can you still change classes as often as you like? Even being the same class several times? (Unlike W&W) It has been so long since I played either W6 or W7 that I have apparently forgot. It seems like I know this answer, but it doesn't make sense right now. If you import great characters that get scaled down, isn't that still better than starting off fresh? If I plan on falling back on my old style of switching all the time, wouldn't each character have the chance to rebuild their skills and spells just like a brand new character? It seems that they would, but then again, I seem to remember that for some reason, when I imported to W7 it wasn't quite that simple. As always, any input or advice is welcome and appreciated. Tanx. (Maybe I was Grim Reaper on the W&W board.) |

The trouble with switching classes in Wiz 8 is that you do not start over from level one. Your character level and your class level are different. For example, if I start with a fighter and bring him up to a level 5 character, he has both a level 5 fighter and a level 5 character. When he is promoted to level 6, I can change classes. (You can only change classes at level up.) He could then become a level 6 character with a level 5 fighter and a level 1 lord. In order to become a level 2 lord, he must gather enough exp points to be a level 7 character. This is the end of endless class switching, because when you are a high level character it could take a long, long time to become level 2 in the new class. I haven't experimented yet with what it takes to get spells in the new class, but, for me, level switching will be kept to a minimum.

Hi!
I imported one of my parties, that finished Wizardry7, here are the results : - The imported characters started with about 13000 xp, enough to gain level 5 - Their skill were decreased, but still better than a newly started chars - My Ninja's weapon skills were 99, when imported, decreased to 20, while a new character maybe has one weapon skill with 20 - The magic skills were also decreased, and the fire magic skill erased - Some items were transferred with me, for example : Ymmu's Paw, Elven Bow, some kind of Lance with the Valkyrie, and some Ankh's of Might So I think it's worth to transfer the party. Bye! Sleepwalker, from Hungary

I went to import my characters into 8 and my floppy is bad. I guess that's to be expected. I still have wiz7 installed (at least the gold version). Does anyone have a saved game (going the umpani route) from wiz7 gold just BEFORE finishing the game? I'd really like to import my characters and I can use a character editor to make the save game match my characters.
If you do, please email it to me, I'd really appreciate it. And, for what it sounds like, I'll have to change a few classes from what I had at the end. I, like most people, switched levels constantly in wiz7 and ended with all elite classes in the end. |

Worth it! Five "free" levels and 20 starting points in every skill (plus the bouns up points and spells for the 2nd - 5th level). Absolutely worth it.
Heck, if you don't have a saved game (but you still have Wiz7) just make the starting party you want in Wiz7, edit them up with the UGE editor - still available at Adreneline Vault - and you have an instantly better starting party (but only as good as those from legitimate imports). Wiz 8 imports them just fine

quote: I had thought of that. But if I do that, I haven't met the T'Rang and the Umpani yet. Do your alliances in wiz7 not matter? Is it a strict character import? Or do your alliances affect your starting point? Any ideas? |
