How many extra spell slots does it give? I'm running EasyTutu and I'm pretty sure I'm only getting the normal amount of slots for him.

Or maybe all mages are getting his bonus, or there's just a problem with the spell slots in EasyTutu...
I just checked the manual and he's got two extra slots in both the 1st and 2nd levels (4/3 instead of 2/1 -- lev3), but so did Xzar (lev 1 or 2 when I dumped him), and so does Dynaheir (who I just met, lev 4). So something weird is going on.

Any thoughts?

Also, how often do mages get a weapon pip? Every... 4 levels? Or is it more than that?

Edwin's necklace?? Hmmmm, never heard of it. What mod's are you running?
Anyway, check for xtra spell slots by taking off the item in question and seeing how many slots you lose. Also, remember that specialist mages get an xtra spell slot, which I believe Xzar and Dynaheir are of that ilk.

Edwin's necklace is in the original game. It's the necklace he comes with that cannot be removed. It's supposed to represent his extra training he got with the Red Wizards of Thay or something.

For mods I'm using EasyTutu (play BG1 in the BG2 engine) and most of the things in BG2_Tweaks.

I ran some tests last night by editing both Edwin and Dynaheir up levels and seeing how their spell slots evolved. But I've forgotten the results, so I'll run them again.

I had forgotten about the extra slot given to specialists, that's what was messing up my calculations. So from what I've been able to figure out, Edwin's necklace gives him an extra slot per spell level on top of his specialize slot, so two extra.

Thanks
