I found this Lost Theory on the official LOST forum, someone posted it.. it's not fact, but a theory.. (GOOD STUFF) Spoils up until the Episode when Clair remembers her kidnapping I think. (Mid season 2)
The Crash: The Mythbusters, in Killer Brace Position (episode 2-26), experimented on whether or not assuming the tucked position would actually reduce the injury sustained, and even save you life in a plane crash. Not only did they prove that the tucked position reduces the amount of injuries you sustain in a crash, but also that a plane is designed in such a way that a majority of passengers do in fact survive the crash. People who survive the initial crash actually die from burn injuries and smoke inhalation. Basically, what kills them is that they are not able to get off of the plane. Since the plane broke into thirds before it crashed, any smoke from a fire could escape and not fill the cabin. The plane being broken into sections also allowed the survivors to exit the wreckage before fire or falling debris caused them further injury. The Survivors of Flight 815: Although a majority of the people on flight 815 have no link to the island what so ever, there are a select few who were manipulated, via different means, to be on the flight. After the crash, those whom were manipulated onto the plane were either kidnapped by the Others, and brought to the Dharma Initiative (DI) facility to be used for whatever it was that they were brought to the island for, or left to stay with the survivors for various reasons. Although it is unknown as to what Jack's place is in this puzzle, it is apparent that the DI wanted to make sure that he survived the crash which was made evident in the first scene of the Pilot when you could see in the reflection of his eye that a Smoke Cloud placed him in the bamboo grove. Based on the fact that Ethan tried to kill him, it is fairly certain that Charlie, like a majority of the passengers on the ill fated flight 815, was an innocent bystander who was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. Much to the dismay of the DI, however, he will prove to be major contributor in foiling their plans, especially in the way of Claire and her baby. Throughout season one, Walt has shown an ability to influence things around him. He reads a book about birds, and a bird flies into the window. Michael tells him that he will look for his dog Vincent as soon as it stops raining, and then the rain eerily stops. Locke, possibly recognizing Walt's innate ability, tells him to visualize in his head the knife going into the tree, and it does. Walt sees a polar bear in a comic book, and a polar bear appears to trap him in a banyan tree. He constantly gets favorable rolls, at will, while playing backgammon with Hurly. As a means to having a constant crop of psychics for various endeavors, Walt and the other children (including Clair and her unborn baby) were lured to the island for their innate psychic abilities. Walt's Mysterious Appearances: As stated in the Hanso film, one of the active projects is an Accelerated Remote Viewing Training Facility. It could be possible that Walt had this innate ability, and the Others are currently trying to develop it. As a side effect of whatever they are doing to Walt to get this to fully manifest, Walt has developed the ability of Astral Projection. Even though Walt is physically with the Others, he "Projects" a copy of himself to individuals at the camp. Because this ability is new to Walt, this explains why the sightings are so random and why he appears to be speaking backwards. The messages appearing to Michael on the computer could also be a form of Walt projecting himself. Walt isn't at another terminal typing, but is astral projecting his thoughts onto the computer for Michael to see. Since he is not concentrating on projecting an image of himself, the message on the screen is concise and un-jumbled. This means that, either, there was never any writing on the computer to begin with so there was nothing for Jack to see, or that Walt was Remote Viewing the Hatch and was manipulating the computer to type for him. When he saw that Jack was coming, he removed the messages from the screen. However, the former seems more plausible since, like when projecting an image of himself, he probably doesn¡¦t have a full grasp of this ability, and can only project to one person at a time. The Numbers: I was watching a documentary on the National Geographic Channel about secret cold war government programs. One of the things covered in this documentary was the United State's Remote Viewing program (Created solely because the Russian had started one). In this documentary, the psychics could remote view anyone and anywhere, but they were more effective if they were given something to home in on. To increase their efficiency, a random series of numbers are assigned to whatever object or place the person is trying to view. The psychic focuses on this number, and uses it to home in on the target. It was after this show that I first started formulating the basis to some of the points in this theory. The number 4 8 15 16 23 42 was assigned to, and engraved on the hatch to enable the Dharma Initiative Remote Viewers (DIRV) to observe what was happening in Station 3. The number was further transmitted from the antenna near the Black Rock (where Rousseau later changed the message to her distress call) to aid DIRVs on the mainland to look in on the progress on the island. The reason the numbers appear to be cursed is because every time someone uses the numbers, it causes the DIRV to be redirected from what they are really targeting (Station 3). To prevent this, every time the unauthorized use of the numbers occurs, the DIRV use their psychic abilities to manipulate the surroundings and events around the user to discourage them from using the numbers again. 4 8 15 16 23 42 being the winning lottery numbers was actually a coincidence, however, the problem Hurly has is that since he won the lottery with the numbers, everything that he acquires using the money that he won is now linked to the numbers. As long as Hurly retains or spends his wealth, he is essentially using the numbers. Realizing that there was no way to stop Hurly from interfering, the DIRV manipulated events around Hurly so that he would be on a flight, along with other people chosen by the DI for various reasons, departing Sidney that they have set up to crash on the island. Now that Hurly is on the island, the remote viewing interference that he was causing before is greatly reduced. The Whispers: The whispers heard in the jungle on the island are actually, two or more DIRVs communicating with each other. http://www.lostlinks.net/whispers.htm Depending on the situation, the whispers can be simple conversations, arguments between the viewers, warnings, and in the case of Ana-Lucia in "The Other 48 Days", them urging the survivors to do something. The Smoke: Many believe that the "Smoke Cloud" which appears in the series is the monster that stalks the jungle. It is my belief that the monster that Rousseau refers to as the "Island's Security System" has not been shown yet, and that the "Smoke" is in fact a spectral manifestation of a remote viewer. Anytime that some one sees the Smoke wisp by, they are actually seeing a remote viewer that is either passing by, or is watching them. Locke was the first to encounter this in the form of Walt's spectral manifestation. When Michael returned to camp after being injured while on a boar hunt with Locke, Walt used his remote viewing ability to go into the jungle to see what Locke was doing. When Locke encountered what he first thought was the monster, he recognized that it was in fact Walt, and it was then that Locke realized what a special child Walt was. Locke encountered Walt's spectral manifestation again, in the season one finale, Exodus. Locke approached what he thought was Walt, but in reality faced the island¡¦s security system. Walt sensing that Locke was in danger did the only thing that he could which was to carry (or pull rather) him to safety, and down into a hole. Another possible way to explain this encounter is that Walt had developed a close relationship to Locke, and may have even viewed him as a protector. While on the raft, Walt somehow may have sensed that the Others were coming and as an unconscious call for help, Walt reached out to Locke for help. Although I am sure that Locke¡¦s first encounter was with Walt, it is possible that his second encounter could have been a DIRV who attempted to save Locke from the island security system, or to just take Locke to a near by DI facility. The ladder may not necessarily be the case based on the fact that if the DI wanted Locke, why haven't they tried to abduct him afterwards? It may be possible that since Locke has taken it upon himself to make sure that the code is always entered that the DI has decided that he serves a better purpose staying with the other survivors. Eko's encounter which occurred in the 23rd Psalm, was with a DIRV. Upon seeing Eko, the DIRV called off the island security system, and went into get a reading on him. The images seen within the smoke during the encounter was the DIRV reading Eko's mind to get an understanding as to what his intentions were. Once the DIRV realized that Eko was not a threat, it backed away, and allowed Eko to continue with his personal quest. The Others and the Dharma Initiative: During their time on the island, the Others (Which are made up of Hanso personnel stationed on the island, and miscellaneous castaways) found that the DI has discovered that the Earth's current electromagnetic (EM) field has been slowly degrading, and unless a way can be found to stop it, the magnetosphere, which prevents sun's deadly radiation from reaching the earth, will eventually fail as well. The focus of Station 3 (the ¡§Swan Hatch¡¨ found by the survivors of Flight 815) was both to study the strange magnetic phenomenon on the island, as well as to find a way to prevent the failure of the EM field. Eventually, the scientists at Station three devised a temporary solution. However, it only slows the degradation of the EM field. The DI established a network of satellites in orbit, which are commanded by a main satellite. These satellites help to maintain the EM field as well as monitor its status. At the end of every cycle, information that has been gathered by the network is sent to the main satellite. Every 108 minutes, which is how long it takes for a satellite to circle the earth, the code must be entered which allows the main satellite to connect with computers on the island and download data on the current state of the EM field. There is a 5-minute window in which the satellite is in position to make the uplink. An alarm in the hatch begins sound when the satellite first comes into position. In the event that an uplink is not able to be made, then the network continues to function based on information from the previous cycle, however, since there was no download, all data accumulated by the network is lost. As a back up, so that the vital information is not lost, a program automatically engages that cause bunker doors (The sounds heard when Lock failed to enter the code on time in One of Them) on the surface to open so that an antenna can be raised which gives the technician one more minute to make the uplink. If the uplink is made before the antenna is raised into position, then the program automatically disengages. Based on the information from the network, the computers keep a log on the current state of the EM field as well as calculate is any adjustments need to be taken by the network (This process may take several minutes so the commands sent up to the main satellite are based on the information the computer received during the previous 108 minute cycle). This information is then sent back to the main satellite so that it can direct the other satellites in the network to continue operating as usual to alter their current functions (i.e. orbit or whatever other functions that are necessary). The Incident: While trying to find a permanent solution for the failing EM field, an experiment involving the magnetic phenomenon on the island went awry causing the first incident. Unfortunately, they were not able to save the connecting "Arrow Hatch". Doing what they could to contain the damage, the lab that was involved with the incident, was sealed up on both ends (One side in the "Swan Hatch" and the other in the connecting "Arrow Hatch"). After the incident, work originally conducted at Station 3 was moved to a new facility to the north (which is the facility currently occupied by the Others). The one thing that could not be moved to the new facility to the north was the many computer systems (Which are in a part of the hatch that either the Flight 815 survivors have not found yet, or is in a room behind the concrete sealed corridor) in Station 3 that was used to monitor and process the information on the EM field. Since all systems seemed to be working normally, they decided to continue this operation in Station 3, and to leave one or two technicians there to maintain the cycle. Desmond and the Hatch: Eventually, Kelvin becomes the technician assigned with the non-desirable job of entering the code. One day, Kelvin finds Desmond shipwrecked on the island, and lures him into Station 3 to take over his duty of entering the code. He promises Desmond that he will return to relieve him, but instead, leaves him alone in Station 3, and goes to the northern facility to pursue more interesting endeavors. Kelvin convinces his superiors to leave Desmond in the hatch, and that they could easily monitor him via the DIRV which they have already been using to monitor everything on the island. Desmond remains in the Hatch entering the code as directed until Jack, Kate and Locke find him. The Other Projects: The Hanso film also mentions other areas of research such as, Quest for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence, Cryogenics Development, and Juxtapositional Eugenics. Although the DI puts most of its efforts toward it's EM field research, the other projects are studied for the purpose of either being a contingency plan, or as a way to augment and support the Initiative. In the early stages of the DI, Hanso and Degroots realized that humans did not have the technology to even begin to comprehend the physics required to restore the EM field. It was then that they resolved that one of their best chances to acquire the knowledge and technology for saving the planet was in the search for extra-terrestrial intelligence. It was the hope of this program was that if a solution could not be found on Earth, then perhaps an intelligent, more advanced civilization from off world would. It is possible that extra-terrestrial contact was made, and that they are currently working with the DI to find a solution to Earth¡¦s failing EM field. Based on the technology available at the time of the Hanso film, humanity did not have the technology required to establish a complex network of satellites, which is currently stabilizing Earth's EM field, and it was through the assistance of extra-terrestrial intelligence that this temporary solution was found and implemented. The search for further extra-terrestrial intelligence continues in the hope that contact can be made with a civilization that has the knowledge and means to fix Earth's failing EM field. The Cryogenics Development program was established as a contingency plan to be used in the event that a solution to the ailing EM field could not be found. If the EM field fails, then radiation from the sun would bombard the planet, making it completely uninhabitable. Without a means of faster than the speed of light travel, it would take several hundred years for humans to reach the nearest inhabitable planet. The most viable way to make such a trip would be to cryogenically freeze traveling colonists, and revive them shortly before arriving at their new home. However, the ingenuity of DI has found that the use of this technology proved to be a major breakthrough with their Accelerated Remote Viewing program. By putting the DIRV into suspended animation, they found that, since the brain is no longer preoccupied with bodily functions, a psychic's aptitude increases exponentially giving them the ability to remote view events anywhere on the planet, and, with the assistance of multiple DIRVs, can even manipulate the surroundings and events that they are viewing. (i.e. Hurly's new house catching on fire, or causing a plane to crash in a pre-designated place). Eugenics is defined as a science that deals with the improvement (as by control of human mating) of hereditary qualities of a race or breed. Means of achieving such goals includes, but is not exclusive to: Prenatal testing and screening, genetic counseling, birth control, selective breeding, in vetro fertilization, and genetic engineering. The DI's research in this field serves as another contingency plan. In the event that humans should have to leave the planet two things must be done. A viable genetic diversity must be made available for the purpose of repopulation, and the people who are chosen to repopulate must be able to survive, not only the trip to their new home, but be able to survive whatever their new habitat may be. Like Cryogenics, Eugenics has proven to have other applications besides its use as a contingency plan. Under the auspices of their Eugenics program, the DI has in place an active breeding program with the objective of acquiring more powerful psychics. In The End: It was shown in the season one finale, Exodus, that the Others had access to a boat. It is quite possible that there are other resources in the island that are available to them. It is obvious that the Others know enough if not everything about the island that they could leave the island whenever they wanted. Jack and the Survivors learn that the Others assist the DI scientists still on the island to find a permanent remedy for the ailing EM field. Finally, all the secrets of the island are revealed to them, and they now have both the opportunity and means to leave the island. Many of the survivors choose to leave the island, but, like the Others before them, Jack and a few others elect to stay on the island to help the Hanso scientists with their work. ------------------------------------------------------- (Someone replied ![]() Wow, that's pretty deep. and at the rate the show gives out info, it would probably take 20 seasons to explain all that!! heheh.. true! This is all guesswork though, so take it all with a grain of salt... [ 03-07-2006, 10:37 AM: Message edited by: Ziroc ] |

Still with the grain of salt that is some good stuff.
