I realize that this movie has come and gone in the theatres but I was succesful in missing it at that time. Today however, my wife rented the DVD and "asked" me to watch it with her. This movie was so pompous, self-serving and fatuous that I had to share my anger. This movie may have been a critic's wet dream, but it was boring beyond belief.
The critic's formula for a good movie seems to be: 1)period costumes 2)English accents 3)long meandering speeches by characters that sound important but mean nothing |

Quick man…take the antidote. Turn on ESPN
Oh wait….long meandering speeches by characters (sportscasters) that sound important but mean nothing. Hmmm Better stick with Nickelodeon.

I can counter that. I had to stick through four hours of Gods&Generals for 10 extra credit points on a history test last year.

Just from the reviews "The Hours" sounded like every other "man bad woman good" pathetic chick flick that's ever been made, not my cup of tea. Luckily my wife thinks those sorts of movies are an embarrassment to women everywhere, so she refuses to watch em. Her idea of a "chick flick" is either something with a hot guy in it (xXx was her most recent favorite), or a movie that's good enough to suck you to the dark side (Fried Green Tomato's, The Color Purple, which even I liked) .
I rented "Gods and Generals" the other day because I thought Gettysburg was an awesome movie... but the prequil was horrible. Pompous is probably the nicest thing I'd have to say about it. It seemed like every line in the movie was lecturing, trite, pompous, or just plain uninteresting. The battle scenes I think took longer than the real battles! There were a handful of enjoyable scenes but the bulk of the movie should have been removed to spare us the idiocy of it. I turned it off several times from sheer BOREDOM only to come back and watch some more (got to get my 4 bucks worth). The kicker is that my in laws LIVE in Fredericksburg and we've toured all the battlefields we could in the area... and THAT was FAR more interesting that the waste of a movie based on those same battles.
