I just started watching the cartoon a couple of weeks ago and even though I don't know exactly what's going on I love it. Could someone fill me in on the basics like the character's backgrounds? Also does anyone know if there is a CD of the show's music available?

i assume you mean the bebop crew.
Jet is an ex cop(the black dog, cause when he bites a crook he doesn't let go) he was set up and lost his arm. He decided to become a bounty hunter.
Spike used to be in a crime syndicate and escaped. He and Jet became partners on jet's ship the bebop.
Ein is a dog who's been genetically altered to make him smarter.
Faye was cyrogenically frozen and can't remember any of her past before she was frozen. She offically joins the crew after having a couple of run ins with the crew.
Ed(one of my favorite anime characters period) is an eccentric child prodigy of a hacker, known in the hacking community as Radical edward. she's kind of an orphan.

You can find several sound track CD's for CB on Amazon as well as the eps on DVD. I have the whole series plus a couple of sounds track CDs I love the music in that series, esp Tank! (the song that plays during the opening credits).

Awesome series! I have the DVD collection, haven't got any of the soundtrack cds though. Incredible soundtrack, it's one of the things that got me into the series.

and you haven't watched it? it's only generally considered the best series ever made. it's what entertainment should be.

I just recently started watching Cowboy Bebop and I love it! There is one episode... episode 5 I think that had Spike falling out a window for about 3 minutes, lol, but I have been trying to find the music that was going while he was falling, does anyone know what it was called or even remember it?

Check the credits, it should be there. Maybe I'll dig out my copy a freeze frame my way through it.
