What's everyone's opinion on Terry Brooks' style of writing and the stories he tells in those books?

Hi Dominions, try having a look at the "Has anyone Read Ilse witch or Skies of Pern yet?" thread started by Lioness. I wrote a personal opinion of the entire Shannara epic in there. His Magic Kingdom books are quite good and fairly amusing, probably his best works, and his latest series (The one with Angel Fire East as one of the books) is an interesting read but a tad monotonous.

Im currently reading the first magic kingdom book, its great!
Its one of the most funny fantasy books i read in a long time, i mean all he has is a talking dog, two kobolds, an incompendent mage and a walking tree! ------------------ ![]() Those who watch their backs meet death from the front- Dreamer128 paladin of the order of the holy flame. |

I really like Brooks' first Shannara trilogy and a good deal of his second trilogy but he seems to do what a lot of writers do a beat a story line until it dies. The third triology was okay and the prequel I totally stayed away from

Hey Albromor!
![]() Hey everyone! Well I don't want to spoil the fun...but I will! ![]() I started the first book in the Shannara series...and I hated it! I could not even finish it...it just seemed so cliched and stale! But i did only read the first hundred and fifty pages or so...maybe I should try him again. But not Shannara...maybe this magic kingdoms one. ![]() |

Hi everyone.
Thanks for the replies! I have actually read some Terry Brooks, which include the Shannara series (almost all of them), part of Magic Kingdom For Sale Sold, Star Wars Episode I. I loved every other book he's written, but was decidedly unimpressed with the rest. This is part of the reason I posted here: i.e. I can't seem to make up my mind concerning this author and was wondering what everyone else thought. The books that I liked: Elf Stones of Shannara, Elf Queen of Shannara, Druid of Shannara, and the the last one (can't remeber the title) in that series. The books that I didn't like: Sword of Shannara, Wishsong of Shannara, Scions of Shannara, Magic Kingdom For Sale Sold, Starwars Episode I. My main objection to the books that I didn't like was that they seemed, well, boring ![]() ![]() Anyway! What does everyone else think? ------------------ Hey! Like RPGs? The last in that series is the Talismans of Shannara.

I hearby refer you to my previous thread entitled "One ligitimate reason to hate Terry Brooks" which opened as follows:-The worst fantasy writer ever is undisputeably (IMO anyway) Terry Brooks!!!!! His first book The Sword of Shanara was a blatant rip off. Every scene (and I don't just mean the major ones) was taken from The Lord Of The Rings (the monster searches for Shea and his freind in the first chapter: the Black Rider incident on the road to Bree, Hendel distracts the Gnomes to allow the parties passage AND Alanon fights a demon in the boiling rooms beneath the dark lords castle(both are blatant Balrog rip offs) whilst one of the half elves escapes to act out a blatant remake or the Sam fights an Orc on the stairs whilst rescuing Frodo from the Orcish tower(just after Shelob), the gnome that he takes hostage becomes distinctly like Golum, Hendel rushes to the cities defense only suddenly noticing a blatant weak point, only slowly followed by others: Boromir defends Merry and Pippin from Orcs, and many other travesties of literature). Not only this but his second book (can't remember the title), featured another Blatant Balrog scene only a few chapters in and began to look familiar. In addition to this the chap who used to do the book review for White Dwarf (a British gaming mag, now more tabletop than in the eighties) took the liberty of describing a very bad book as "so Terry Brookish" and after that my long enmity for this writer has never allowed me to read another book of his.
------------------ Balgin, the Dwarf - Now, admitedly having only read his first two books I cannot give a fair opinion of the others but this covers his first two Shanara books quite effectively (and yes, the woman turning into a tree is possably borrowed from something as well, haven't quite caught it yet (apart from the obvious Daphne and Apolo). ------------------ Balgin, the Dwarf |

Oh well, we're all entitled to an opinion.
