Has anyone read any of the above series? I can't remember the name of the first novel, but the second is "A Clash of Kings" and the third is "Storm of Swords". All I can say is *WOW*!.

This is absolutely the *best* fantasy series that I have ever read (and I've read a hell of a lot)! It is incredibly well written, and Mr. Martin came on the scene with this series just as I was giving up on the fantasy reading scene. I was becoming lethargic in my reading as I was unbelieveably bored with the same 'ol storylines all the damn time.

The author of this series has breathed new life into the fantasy genre via his unusual style of writing. A must read for any fantasy fan! You'll be hooked!

If you're curious about how his writing style differs, let me know and I'll provide you with the very minor spoiler.

What does everyone else who has read it think of this series?

George R.R. Martin also did a bit of Sci-fi. A book of stories called Nightwing (turned into a movie) and Tuf Voyaging, which was a great book. Probably not in print but if you can find it-read it

Thanks for the tip, me Lord! I'll check it out! Nightwings was made into a movie, huh? Hmmm...

BTW, on the topic of Mr. Martin...am I the only one who finds his propensity for totally nuking what you expect to be the main story line (frequently, might I add) to be a bit disturbing? The end of Storm of Swords totally freaked me out. I thought that I had the end of the series all figured out and then, after the climax of the story, I was like, "Oh crap...where's this going now?"

Excellent stuff , best series I've read in a LONG time. He also wrote a vampire story Fevre Dream which I haven't gotten yet but is supposed to be excellent (won a Hugo award I think ).

Martin is definitely in my top ten...he's perhaps one of only 3 or 4 writers who aren't utterly predictable in their storylines, and a great writer to boot.

Thumbs up from me - I get all of his stuff as soon as it hits the shelves. He knows how to carry a widespread tale, and keeping things unpredictable (per Kerlyssa) is a big plus. After reading the initial development of the Stark family, I sort of expected a triumphant vengeful son thing from young Robert. Not afarid to kill off the odd character here or there is he. Bring on the next installment.
