I logged onto today and worked on a player concept. I made a fighter with pretty decent starting stats..and did my initial 7 lvls your given. I got him to Fighter lvl 6 and Weapon Master 1. I equipped myself very well with the starting cash and proceeded down to help clear drow for the quest.

I had done this before a couple times but this time around I was getting my arse handed to me left and right. I was by no means a chump but geez! Mobs that before I could swat away like fleas on my other starter character(Fighter 7 lvls) was giving me a beat down left and right?

Has the diffuculty been raised?

Not to my knowledge no. maybe they were getting lucky with their rolls or you were unlucky with yours.

That area is not easy for a new level 7 character so I would recommend taking a henchie with you.

Were you proceeding more slowly with your first character?

I am not sure how Ziroc has implimented the call-to-arms in Undermountain but if you rush into a room you can expect to be swarmed by all the nasties in that area.

My first characters would proceed slowly to see what was in each area. He would stop near the doorway and pick off monsters as they approached him. Later characters would rush in with the attitude "I already know what's there"... BIG mistake! I would get my butt kicked (repeatedly).

My advice is to take it slow and bring friends along... lots of friends

I've kinda noticed the same thing. Most of the monsters in Undermountain aren't so bad, if you can get them one or two at a time. Note I said most... I had been tooling right along through the gauntlet, until I ran into a group of undead, I won't go into details, but suffice to say, being in a hurry cost me my life, several times. Until then, I'd had a really high success rate.

I know all about being swarmed - even when using higher level characters. Of course, I am the same sick bastard(tm) who goes to dungeon levels far greater than my character can handle just to get the stuff people drop off and leave behind. One way to avoid that is (as most people have suggested) to bring allies with you whom are well-armed AND travel slowly. Something else I learned was to have a long range weapon handy at all times (or spells if you can use those). Anything that allows you to draw a line between your opponents and yourself from a distance is a good thing.

Yeah, I found it easy with my shifter but hard with my wizard, but I found the first level of undermountain hard with my shifter but easy with my wizard.

Word of advice to any and all starting out inside of the Undermountain? Hire one of the henchmen available on the first three levels. Cookie (basic fighter) is accessible right within the inn itself. Roddybug The Wizard can be found within the first level of the Undermountain. Moric, ranger nonpareil, is located on the second level of the Undermountain. Don't be afraid to go looking for them if you want some help in the early going. Why? Because they have enough equipment to get them through the day without you needing to give them anything. And if you want them more powerful, get them the armor they deserve. (Normally I've gotten it off the monsters trying to kill me.)
