Yeah, the server was acting pretty funky last night. I was watching it in the Gamespy panel, and it must have shut off 3 or 4 times in about 10 minutes.

On a semi-related topic, every time I buy boots of speed from Durnan, I time out. It's a bit of a gag with me now. I've started about 5 chars (I can never decide what to play ) and each time I go to buy the boots I have to leave them till last, and say bye to everyone cause I know I'm going to timeout (not crash!). But it's only the boots so far...

Yeah, this is odd, because it started yesterday. I haven't done anything (atleast that I can rememeber) so I am at a loss. I have been watching the server though, it may be traffic or may be something else (NWN Gamespy pinger)

When it doesn't show up in gamespy, someone try a direct connect with the IP in the first sticky thread, and let me know if you can log in. This would help me understand if it's the server or not.

We seriously need to upgrade the server too. I am starting a collection soon for just funds that go to the upgrade--and we won't have a final date to worry about . It shouldn't cost much. A new AMD or P4 CPU, Maybe new Motherboard and new Ram. I have all the rest.. I have a nice new HD we installed months ago, and it's rocking fine, but the increasing tax on the machine is evident.

Hey Z if you need protection software for the server (ie you want to run a server platform so stuff like Nortons won't work on it)

I can get you Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition ( I work for Symantec so its leagal stuff)

I might be able to get a hold of some other stuff like Ghost as well for you. Let me know if you need any Symantec software and I will see how it goes. May save you a bit of cash software wise.

I have ghost I had to get it when I had that HD that way dying last year, and I loved ghost! It saved so much time!

I have a good antivirus installed as well, and it uses very low memory, which is why I chose it over Norton. I do use norton on my personal PC though.

I have the server locked tight via 2 firewalls. 1 hardware and 1 software and a nifty program that detects any pinging or sniffing. I've never been hacked in the 10 years I've run a website,(knock on pressed wood) So we're cool in that area. I try to keep as least programs loaded as I can to spare memory and cpu time. I am a tweak freak from the Quake 1-3 days

Hope I'm not sticking my nose in where it's not wanted, but have you considered running the dedicated server for Linux? I wonder how many, if any, actually are. It seems like it ought to be vastly superior because:

a) It runs on Linux (not bashing MS. Linux is just leaner.)
b) It is a dedicated server (no gui, etc.)

Z have you ever thought about a new E7525 series Mother Board server with Duel pent4 3.6Mhz & 16GB Ram ?
this is the fastest server on the market and will support over 100 people on line at the same time with no slow down.
I think that if you asked for donations that you could come up with the $1800.00 it would cost to put it all together. It may take 4 or 5 months to get it all togrther but you would never need another server. I come back and add a link to the server on line imfo so you can see what I'm talking about. I could have the stats wrong.

OK here is the Motherboard site check it out

http://tweaknews.pricegrabber.com/se...sterid=3152882

The EATX X6DA8-G2 Motherboard features the Intel E7525 chipset and supports up to two Intel Xeon processor(s) with EM64T and 1MB L2 Integrated Advanced Transfer Cache up to 3.60GHz, 800MHz system bus and up to 16GB DDRII-400 registered ECC SDRAM. On-board devices include an ICH5R SATA Controller with RAID 0, 1and JBOD support, an Adaptec AIC-7902 controller Dual-Channel Ultra320 SCSI with RAID 0, 1, 10 and JBOD support and an Intel 82546GB Dual Port Gigabit Controller that supports 10BaseT, 100BaseTX, and 1000BaseT, RJ45 output. AC'97 audio CODEC with high quality 6-channel sound handles audio. Two Serial ATA ports support two SATA hard drives and dual EIDE channels support up to four UDMA IDE devices (supports UDMA Mode 5, PIO Mode 4, and ATA/100). There are 6 PCI slots and up to eight USB ports. This motherboard has eight 4-pin fan headers and eight fans with status monitoring and low noise fan speed control. It comes with SuperO Doctor III, Watch Dog and NMI software.

Hmm. Hope my previous post wasn't misleading.

The dedicated server for Linux is software, not hardware. It is a free download from Bioware.

It should run fine on Fedora Core2, which is also a free download (albeit large).

Both should run on your current hardware and be much less demanding on said hardware, thus possibly alleviating the need for a hardware upgrade.

Of course, I don't know if you use the PC that runs the server for anything besides running the server, so this might be a completely unacceptable solution for your needs. I just thought I would suggest it in case you hadn't heard about it.
