Picture this:
Two intrepid adventurers, a monk and fighter/blackguard (myself and robertthebard) make their way onto level 11 and clear it (with a few respawns along the way). They stop to savor the moment, gather their thoughts, grab a little loot and heal their wounds. As they are resting, an intrepid paladin (whose name shall be kept anonymous for reasons soon to be made clear) enters level 9 and makes his way to his destiny. As the adventurers on level 11 watch, the paladin fights through level 9 and is soon toe-to-toe with Big Red - the meanest, orneriest, scaliest hunk of fire breathing death this side of Faerun. And Big Red is even nastier than normal - having met it's death just earlier at the hand of roberthebard. Our paladin is undaunted however and wades into battle. He is ill-prepared and quickly dies, respawns and dies again, respawns and dies yet again. On this goes, seemingly endlessly, and the respawns start climbing rapidly. 10, 15, 20. Can he make two dozen? 25, 30, 35 - will Big Red regain his title belt? Will the paladin turn tail and run away? Not this paladin!!! He respawns yet again and wades back into the fight! Our adventurers on level 11 stand transfixed in horror (or is it convulsed in laughter)! The respawns mount anew - 40, 45, 50! 50 times our paladin has faced death and embraced it, and still he comes back for more! A fourth adventurer joins the game, and rushes to the paladins aid. Hopefully he can give support that we can not - for we are doubled over in laughter two levels below. On this goes, the entire struggle lasts for over an hour!!! 55, 60 and then 65 respawns! THis guy won't give up! Big Red slays the paladin a 66th time (or perhaps it was 65 or 67 - we had finally lost count) while the new arrival dies not once. Finally, the final death blow is struck and at last, it is over. The Dragon lies dead, and the paladin struggles onward to new challenges and more deaths on level 10. Such are the heroes of Undermountain!

And thank you for not mentioning how many times i respawned against red. I later had a chance to meet the aforementioned paladin, and gave him his kudoes, and maybe a couple of raspberries as well. I believe he holds the record for most consecutive deaths against a single foe in Undermountain. And if not, why?
He definitely gets my vote for best fight to watch, and be glad your not in. And as for running commentary, who could beat it, especially after about 20 minutes of he's going to rescue us from lvl 11. It's a good thing we found some place safe to hide, because i couldn't have fought a rat during the whole episode. Heartless, cruel, maybe, but it was amazing to watch the dedication to a cause this paladin displayed. Just when i thought that I was going to post about my epic battle, girly blackguard on dragon battle, bam, here comes the paladin, to show me how it's really done. Still, any time you can solo, or just 2 chars beat red down, you have accomplished something, and in the case of this paladin, he has earned my respect, and provided me with so much laughter that I still hurt. Plod on Noble Paladin, the next challenge awaits.

This reminds a little of what happened at Nordock (strict 3rd ed. rule settings: you die, you go to the Fugue). My brother, a dwarven warrior, and I, a halfling "borrower", both around level 7. We were advancing down a mine shaft, coming across all kinds of nasties. There were gnolls, mephits, even an earth elemental (he was surprisingly easy). Then we came into a large opening, much more accommodating that the previous cramped setting. Then we saw the black beast.. and he saw us. A little tip: be careful where you click when turning corners with a large beast tailing you. I, unfortunately, clicked the dragon when trying to take a left turn, and in one hit I was down. Resurrection is a complicated thing in Nordock, your body has to be retrieved then the proper spell cast on it. It was an adventure all its own trying to retrieve my body from where it lay in front of the dragon.

This reply may contain a spoiler, or not.
/ / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / How about the green escaping from the tower on lvl 8? And the reluctant dragon slayers that took her down? All we really wanted to do was run as fast as we could, which may have been more in char, but was not with in me to do. After she totally routed the party, except for one paladin, *who also had swords that have been mentioned elsewhere*, who ran for it to the outside of the tower, with the green in hot pursuit. Nolace and i, after much discussion, upon finding out she was outside, decided we were running for it to lvl 9, and if she chased us, maybe her and red would kill each other, ran for the door, and both of us stopped, just outside the tower, the dragon just in visual range. We started to run, but couldn't, in good consience, leave the dragon loose. So plucking up what courage we could find, we engaged the beast. It was a route, the dragon laughed as she killed first myself, and then went after Nolace. The common practice of res was immediately thrown out, as both of us died, and then took off running, stopping when the dragon got too close, only to die again. *Note to self, even with haste boots, dragons can out run tiny pc's*. We finally end up cornered in the little rakshasha area, with the dragon trying to get us by where the cage is, grabbing up all the maces we could, we went on the offensive. The pally showed up and i tried to give him a couple of the maces to make the attempts, but he was having nothing to do with the *tiny weapons*, and so it fell to me, a bard/assassin/arcane archer, to make the attempt. After 6 maces, the harm spell takes, and snapping out her bow, i fire a seeker arrow, which takes a while, but always hits, and the dragon is dead. There is much rejoicing, and we continue on our way. That was an excellent battle, that none of the playing chars wanted, but were unable to leave the beast to run free.
