First off, a big
Welcome to the Ironworks, Astina!

Then, on to the favourite class...
For me, it's the cleric. Although I may be slightly biased after Linu helped my see rogue through the official campaign, I am convinced these are one of the best classes (although monks, wizards and mages aren't bad either).
Some good defensive spells, the ability to wear armour, the near fighter-like abilities, oh, and the Harm spell. I'm a big fan of that one. Works almost every time, on almost everything. Harm. Can you say it? Haaaarm. Haaaaarm. Lovely. Yes, some people spend just a little too much time indoors, but it's all a matter of perspective in the end.
Haaarm...

Welcome to IW, Astina! Hope you enjoy your stay!

As for my favorite character class, it is of course the one and only Rogue. Maybe I'm just a sneaky bast... er, person, but I love sneak attacks. And being able to detect all traps and disarm them (provided the skills are high enough, of course) is totally cool. I like to use my Rogue as a long distance killer, coming in occasionally to sneak attack someone. It doesn't cost me anything to have my henchman revived, after all, so why not let him/her take all the abuse?

Rogue/Mage (11/9) is my fave at the mo

I'm going to experiment with a fighter/ranger combo. The ultimate light armour terror!

Opposition school is Enchantment, and I figure I can live without charming / dominating creatures, the extra spells are worth it.

Int 16, Con 18 (to start with, raise int to 19 for 9th level spells, then work on con)

Feats : Toughness, Martial weapons (the one for long swords, bows, etc)

Items on my "To Aquire List" : Astral Long Blade (available at the smith in act 1) , belt of greater swordsman ship (20/- vs slashing) gloves of greater swordsman ship (+6 parry).

Skills: Parry, Persuade, plus the usual wizard ones.

Spells : Always get the most powerful Monster Summoning spell as soon as you level up for it. Those things stay with you all day long (24 hrs) and make for great front line fighters. Always keep one summoned, and one spare for when it dies.

Familiar : Up until level 5, it's either the panther or the Hell hound, for the extra help in a fight. AFter that, they die too much, switch to the pixie.

Henchman: Up until level 5, Tomi Undergallows. Openning chests and catching traps are great ! After that, you can swap him out for Daelen for the tough fights and use the pixie for the chests, though that's a pain.

Weapons : Crossbow, astral long sword. With a decent henchman and a summoned monster half the fights you just stand back watching them do all the work, not wanting to waste any spells. Cross bow is good for making a (small) contribution to such fights. Astral sword is for when you get caught. Attack of Opportunity rules mean you try and drink a potion or cast a spell or run away and the enemey gets to beat on you good. Stand your ground with the sword and just go pure parry and wait for your henchman and summoned to get you out of trouble.

Order of spells: Fire balls first to weaken up the lackeys. Specific spells like acid arrow and magic missile on the toughies after that. Then either polymoreph self - Umber Hulk , or Tensors transofrmation (if you're high enough level to cast it) and wade right in after you ran out of spells.

This particular build of wizard has had no trouble at all in the official campaign. The tough fights I bring the half orc daelon along, the rest of the acts I bring tomi undergallows along. Works great. Smooth sailing.

Opinions ?

I'm playing through the game for my first time now, although I've played both Baldur's Gate games and Icewind Dale before. I'm playing as a half-elf fighter/bard. It's a lot of fun. I'm at level 4/4 right now. I haven't really put points into or made use of the bard's rogue skills yet, but Tomi is my henchman, so I don't really need them. However, being a fighter and having access to things like the Bard Song, mage armor, resistance, etc is very very useful. And because most of the spells the bard can cast are defensive in nature and usually cast before battle anyway, i can always just remove my armor to avoid the 45% spell failure chance that comes with a set of full plate .
