Is their anything helpful about being a specialist mage? ex. do they get bonuses for their certain spells? i was just wondering if there was a good reason to be one, if all it is is a hindrance.

thanx!

If my memory serves me well, they get one extra spell slot each spell-level. So, a lvl 5 conjurer, for instance, will be able to memorize five lv. 1 spells, three lv. 2 spells, and two lv. 3 spells.

It is true, and it makes specialists much more profitable than regulars. Especially if you have a backup mage who covers the missing school.
