First of all ive never been happier with any character but with my ranger nothing better!!! one disadvantage is that yes he has stealth but it isnt that good. He can sneak around like a wuss and sit still until my party is ready to attack but i almost NEVER use this and you cannot backstab(i wish you could) so is there really any use for this????

Not really, unless you're soloing and are feeling really lucky. Usually with a party one would just have his thief do that, but I take it that you don't have one.

I remember reading somewhere though that in BG a ranger's stealth also gets better depending on the amount of vegatation around, which would make sense since he is the nature boy, but I wouldn't be able to say if it's true since I've never tried it.

Stealth is probably THE most powerful ability in BG1--the Thief's ability to Backstab is just a bonus.

If you're "stuck" with "just" a Ranger, you can still:
- Tiptoe around to scout out possible enemies, gaining knowledge of their number, species, weaponry, and possible tactics, before they even know you're there
- Duck behind a big rock and turn invisible to hide from the big bad thingy that just ate your arm
- Enjoy a -4 bonus to your THAC0 when attacking from Stealth
- Combine with some form of Haste to really annoy the bad guys who can't shamble along fast enough to get a single hit on you

Howzat?

Risking to be accused of tread hijacking I want ta ask the following question:

How do you backstab with a thief? Do you just attack the enemy from behind, while you are in stealth mode?

yes - with an appropriate weapon - i vaguely recall that boots of speed soemtimes broke it in BG1

more generally, a minor BG2 appetiser (if its in the manual its not a spoiler right?) - some ranger kits can backstab

How do you know then, that you have made a backstab and not just an ordinary attack? Does it show in the message window?

The most effective use of the stealth ability for rangers is the usefulness in a hit and run attack (basically: grab a bow, hide, move forward until you find an enemy, shoot, run around the corner and hide again, then reposition and repeat). Even large groups of tough enemies can be totally decimated in time using this tactic, especially when you are using boots of speed as well. It's mainly reserved for rangers and thieves, and since thieves may not use longbows, and the ranger is a warrior class, rangers are better at hitting and dealing damage (although crossbows hit harder than longbows, and are even better suited to the task). Thieves often have the advantage when it comes to the hiding though, as a ranger's stealth ability increases only a little per level and it takes longer to reach a reliable hide in shadows percentage.
