I'm playing as a thief, and I'm experimenting with some different party formations to make things interesting instead of going for that "balanced" party. I decided it might be fun to have nothing but thieves. So right now we have my pc, Imoen, Safana, and we just added Coran. We do a lot of running around b/c nobody classifies as a tank to stand toe to toe, but it's fun so far. My pc is loaded up on stealth and pickpockets. I will focus in on stealth for Coran so we'll have 2 backstabbers. Imoen and Safana are fairly low on stealth, so they do trap, chest and door duty. I'm starting to feel that Safana is a little superfluous though. Does anyone every use her/like her? I'm also considering adding a bard at some point to be a total band of scoundrels and add in some magic ability, but i don't like Garrick. I hear there's another one out there somewhere.

Anyone else ever experiment with 1-class heavy parties?

The other bard, Eldoth, is evil. Not in a psychotic evil way, more like completely lacking any shade of compassion. He has a rather demanding personality.

What about lil Montaron? Surely he is a homicidal maniac, but he's cute. You could just have Xzar suffer a little "accident" somehow involving Monty's knife. Montaron would be happy to comply to such a move.

Once you reach Baldur's gate you'll suddenly have a host of new possibilities.

SPOILER POST if you don't want to know about other characters you will encounter in the game.

6 backstabs would be way cool!

I just did a little snooping and realized that, Holy Schnikeys, there are a lot of thieves in this game. I must have missed a lot my first time through. Alora could be cool with her 19 dexterity. I'd investigate the possibility of Montaron, but I told him to get lost at the beginning of the game, so he's not an option anymore....wait, there's a cleric/thief as well, n'est pas? That could solve our healing woes to an extent, but that person wouldn't be a backstab option.

Tiax can indeed Backstab--or at least "Backwhack." Clubs, Staves, the Staff Mace, and the Staff Spear are all valid Backwhack weapons for Cleric/Thieves.

You know, this is a really good idea. I love playing thieves, they're definitely my favorite. I never thought of having six of them. Tell me how it comes out. If it works good for you, I just might have to be a cheeseball and try it myself next game.

Hmm - never thought of that. As far as I remember the AD&D 2nd edition rules only allows thieves to backstab with a pointed weapon with the maximum length of the length of a short sword. This only allows weapons such as dagger, knife, stiletto, short sword, and special weapons of the same kind.

Do you tell me that a thief is able to backstab with the defender (if you have 'aquired' that weapon in your party ) or a 2-handed sword (if you are a fighter/thief)?

Yes, I realized there are a lot of them in BG1. Hence, there aren't many in SoA and that drives me crazy. Only good thief in SoA is Yoshimo and he *SPOILER* betrays you so you can't keep him *SPOILER*. Imoen and Nalia are dualed to mages so they can't gain more thieving points. So, the only option is to go with Jan who is SO damn annoying!!!

In BG1, Thieves and Fighter/Thieves (of any stripe) can Backstab with:
 • Daggers
 • Short Swords
 • Long Swords
 • A certain unique pair of Scimitars
 • Clubs
 • Staves
 • the Staff Mace (ToSC)
 • the Staff Spear (ToSC)
All of the following weapons will cancel the Backstab multiplier if used for a Backstab:
 • Any other Scimitar
 • Maces
 • Spears
 • In short, any weapon that a pure Thief cannot use
In BG2, Thieves CAN use Scimitars, and therefore can Backstab with them too. But there is also a certain Staff that only Mages can use, and if your character is a Thief/Mage or F/T/M, you can use the Staff, but you cannot Backwhack with it.
Flaming Fist Enforcer, I appreciate that you wrote your spoiler invisibly, but there's really no reason for it in the BG1 forum at all--the temptation to read ahead is just too great. I, personally, would post that invisible spoiler just as it is in the BG2 forum, but here, I would merely say that good Thieves in BG2 are extremely scarce, and let it go at that. Personal taste, of course. Cool sig picture, BTW. Way too big, of course, but still cool.
