This is my very very first post in this forum and since my BG 2 game doesn't work I decide to play BG1 again. Playing as a pretty strong ranger deadly up close deadlier far away. I have 2 questions regarding the Minsc and Edwin quest and somehting else.

1)Should I or should I not (mayhap a spoiler) kill Dlypinear its hard 2 choose.

2) If you have a 9 stats on anything it means average right?

1)Well, Dyanheir or Edwin or probably the best mages in the game, especially since at the right level Dyanheir will already have the fireball spell. You need to consider that Minsc and she are a pair, but you also are already a strong fighter yourself. You also might consider the fact that Edwin is evil and if you are a roleplayer then you miss out on fighting all his little wizard freinds elsewhere.

2)Yes.

Wilbur you villain! It's Edwin that has the fireball spell; Dynaheir cannot cast it at all. Your character needs to be around the level 6 mark for this before you pick Edwin up however. I'm sure its the same sort of thing in BG2 - don't talk to the NPC until you want them to join or they'll stay at the level you initiated contact with them. If that makes sense.

But if its your first time through the game,,,,,,,you don't know this.

Plus you should play for RP value.

Edwin - "Hi"
You - "Sod off, I'll chat later when I'm a higher level. Don't want you yet! Geesh!"

Lol.

Considering that Dynaheir is an Invoker, I would be mightily surprised at any inability to learn Fireball. The only mage in the game who cannot cast Fireball is Xan, as he is an Enchanter (although he can still cast Fireballs from scrolls, and use Wands of Fire).

Powergaming-wise, the idea of not recruiting Mages until the party is Level 6 or so is a sound strategy: You don't have to drag some weak-ass Mage all over the map, pouring your EXP into them. Instead, recruit them later: They already know more good spells, they have a tolerable number of hitpoints, and they've already got the weapon point in Missile that they need.
The only roleplaying excuse for this kind of behavior that I can see is that in the first few stages of the game, you have no need for a Mage: You're fighting Kobolds, Xvarts and Bandits, who the hell needs Web? You want to build a party of Warriors, with 1 Thief and a Priest or two. But later on, after you've seen the power of some of the spells that the enemy Mages have been casting at you, it's time to start thinking, "Hey, maybe I should get a Mage too."

Hmmm, as to your first point Six', you're quite right. sorry about that Wilbur (amd Sythe).

As to not dragging a mage over the length and breadth of the Sword Coast...that makes little real sense in terms of RP. You need friends, have precious few at the start, and might like the company. Who knows, if you suggest that you don't like the look of Monty and Xan (who could resist them) don't take them. In addition, if you follow Gorion's advice and go to the 'Arm, you'll pick up Khalid and Jaheira, giving you four - with Imoen. You might consider that enough in your party and not want anymore.

Taking or not taking a mage at the beginning depends on your point of view. Especially so if it's your character that is the mage!

so uh should I kill Dyanpaier or not. I am afraid if I don't kill her Edwin would never ever want to team up with me ever again. If I kill her my favorite character Minsc would be gone! Is there anyway I can keep them both? If I keep them both too long they both get cranky and leave my part forever!!!

You can keep both Edwin AND Minsc.

1) Leave Edwin temporarly somewhere in a town (make sure he does not wander away from the spot but stays and wait for you).
2) Go with Minsc and rescue Dynaheir.
3) When you come back to the town with both Minsc and Dynaheir in your party, speak with Edwin. He will discover that you already have met the 'witch'. After some arguing Dynaheir and Edwin will agree to stay in your party 'watching over eachother'
4) Go to some place you never want to visit again (Ex. a common house in a city or a tent at the carnival).
5) Select all party members but Dynaheir and leave the place (Dynaheir stays)
6) Now, when you are outside the house/tent and Dynaheir is inside the building/tent, rearrange your party to 'dump' Dynaheir.
7) Move on with Edwin and Minsc in your party. They will sound like grumpy old men (especially Edwin if your reputation is too high) but stay. I have heard that you should keep your reputation at 15 (appr.) and have a high charisma to be able to keep both in your party all the way through.

Go with minsc to rescue Dynaheir, with out Edwin, and then have dynaheir attack a large group of gnolls. After she dies, Minsc will then stay with you if you drop her, go talk to Edwin and he will tell you that as your reward he will work with you. As for the keeping of the party together I recomend a cursed helm of opposite alignment for Edwin.

Hmm - I have thought of that too, but are wizards allowed to wear helmets?
