Even with the patch, villagers can still get caught in the tunnels (only on the second time through village). The easy way out of this it to "remove" him -think of it as doing the toad a favor 'cause he would most likely starve to death- in one quick blow. You have to make sure you kill him in one blow 'cause if you don't, he will call the guards and then you'll be "Bad Ukabu". If you have a spell caster with you, I suggest meteor. It's quick, clean and powerfull enough.

You'll find this necessary if some of your party members do the Toad Quest after a first bunch completed it.

Sometimes you can say "Hail" and the toads (stuck in the front of the ladder that leads you to Shinwiki) will follow you allowing you to lead them back to a place where you can go around them.
I also found that at a higher level (like 6 or 7) no one cares that you off the toad (stuck in the water)

1. You can even kill a guard if you are enough fast. Use a medium level spell like Flamestrike or Demonic Fist (even if it hits you, too).
2. The only villager that is "hopeless" is the one that will hang in the water pool on your way to Shinwiki. He is hanging in the pool, striding in place and he cannot be moved anywhere anyhow. The others can be usually dragged away by telling them "hail" and then going to another place.
3. Avoiding the "hopeless" villager: At the begining, the villager is in one of the nearby tunnels. Therefore, jump down and run to the pool so that you will be behind the pool before the villager enters it.
