I found some level 1 mage spells (for Xzar) on some enemy bodies....can I cast one of those spells and have a chance of learning it? Do I have to rest to see if I've learned the spell? Is this what, in the profile screen (er that icon of a person's head, left hand column) is for where it says "Chance to learn spell" or do I have to have an enemy cast a spell on me for this to work OR do I have to read a book or what?
Oh, and there's some mage in Nashkel in the southern part of town that wants you do help him defeat some witch...is he any good? P. S. I love the question when you quit the game "Are you sure you want to quit? Boo will miss you..." ROFL!!!!

After you find or buy a spell scroll, place it in your mage's inventory. Then right-click that scroll, if it shows a "learn spell" button, then your character CAN learn that spell. In the character's personal information sheet, it states that character's percentage or chance to learn a spell. So when you click on the spell scroll's "learn" button. There is a chance that you will fail to learn that particular spell. So I would recomend saving your game before you attempt to learn a spell.
After he/she has learned that spell, go to their spell inventory window and it will state what spells you have learned, or "known spells". To the left are open slots inwhich you can place a specific spell (that you have learned) into, so that after your next resting you will have memorized it and it can be used. If your mage can't learn that particular spell (because of mage school conflictions) or you have already learned it. Then you can place that scroll into that mage's quick slot and it can be used without learning or memorization, however it will vanquish once it is used. That mage in southern area of Nashkel is named Edwin. He is probably the most powerful NPC/mage in the game (I like quayle equally as well). However, he is Evilly aligned, very annoying, and requires that you eventually kill Dynaheir, who is being held captive at the Knoll Stronghold. If you have an evil or neutrally aligned main character, then you shouldn't have any problems with having Edwin, but remember to keep your reputation at or below 15 (roughly). But if you have Edwin in your party than it's a little hard to have Minsc too.

Minsc is the strongest NPC in the game with 18/93 for his strength and is a favorite of many gamers, however he looses a quick slot because of that stupid rat that he takes along. Dynaheir is a darn good mage in her own right and is good or neutrally aligned. If you decide to take in Edwin, then you can always substitute the brute force of Minsc with a woman fighter named Shar-teel. I have yet to include Shar-teel in any of my parties, but others on this forum have hailed her as either the best or second best NPC fighter in the game. It's up to you.
