After giving the book on mythril to Orrick in Kuldahar, I recieved my experience but not the item he asks me to take as a reward. Is the item anything worth having or shall I continue without it? If it's of some use i'll put it in using Dalekeeper.

It's useful. The item is random, though. Probably the best of the bunch is a ring that protects against death spells.

Ok, according to Dan Simpson's walkthrough/FAQ, the possible random items are:

Girdle of Labelas (cast Haste once/day, Free Action)
Mithran's Cloak (+3 AC, +2 Saving Throws)
Elfbone Ring of Kiran-Hai (+2 Save Para/Pois/Death)

Perhaps I was wrong about the ring. I thought it was more effective than a mere plus to saving throws. Anyway, I've received the Girdle most of the time; very useful, especially if you have a gnome or halfling to wear the helmet you can buy from Conlan (forget what it's called, but +3 AC and immunity to fatigue). The girdle is like another free action ring, and you can get the equivalent of a speed potion with no fatigue, every day (with the helmet).

Edit: On reflection, the ring might be the worst of the bunch. The other two are more universally helpful, although the ring helps in Lower Dorn's.
