Hello
There are no spells higher than 5th level spells implemented into the game therefore this is the highest level obtainable. Also if you dont have TOTSC installed you cant even reach a level high enough to use them.Buy them in Baldurs gate some fourth + fifth levels and you could use the scrolls to cast the spell but then you cant write in to your spell book.

Spellcasting characters gain the ability to learn new spell levels, and cast more spells per day, by earning EXP points and Leveling Up. If you've been running around with a party of Fighters and Thieves, you are going to have to recruit a couple of spellcasters, and then take them on quests, so they gain EXP and Level Up before they are going to be able to cast any of the more powerful spells in this game.

Even in the later stages of the game, you won't use spells much for actual combat--but as far as summoning up a bunch of allies and casting spells that improve the party's fighting ability, casters are pure gold. Mages only become REALLY powerful in BG2.

Do you need anything but Sleep, Magic Missile/Chromatic Orb and Fireball? Those are the only spells I usually use.

Oh yeah? What about Haste, Web, Stinking Cloud, Resist Fear and Monster Summoning? Almost every spell's good for something. ("Waaaaahhhh! I'm a Conjurer and I can't learn Infravision! Waaaaahhhh!")

Infravision is in my opinion the most useless spell in the game.
I mean, you usually have at least one elf in your party

I've never really used stinking cloud and those very much.
I guess firing off 2-3 "unharming" spells can be usefull in case one of them fails.

I'd have to agree on the whole infravision being pure rubbish stuff however web is by far one of the best spells in the game! Try the old web, grease and entangle combo on an enemy party so to restrict them from anything such as movement spellcasting or firing ranged weapons. Than shoot in some fireballs and magic missiles and i guarantee complete anihalation most of the time, unless the enemy have some sort of powerful magic resistance.

I personally have much fun with Mr. Magic Missile aka Xzar with Wizard's Ring and Mr. Fireball aka Edwin.
Generally, you can take 2 pathes for your magic usage: either you go ahead and use mages as support units for your fighters - to speed them up, give them protection - and then go ahead and bash evil. Or you use your fighter to distract your enemy and beef him up with magic.
What do you want to do?
