Good morning. I am in Lower Dorn's deep, down the elevator, and am being hit with 8-12 umber hulks at once. I can't seem to dispatch them without being killed. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Umber hulks are among the most annoying creature in BG2, but i havent got to them in IWD yet. The following is therefore based on general principles:

Protect from confusion. Chaotic commands and suchlike.

And then the general fighter buff spells:

Recitation and Prayer (If you cast these with the umber hulks in range your effecive bonus is +6)

Haste. Add another 1 to that bonus and double your attacks.

Open up with a fireball barrage and procede as you see fit.

Hey edoe,

Umber hulks can be very annoying i know.......when i had to fight them i always asked my mage to summon monsters right in front of the hulks. The hulks then simply use their confusion gaze on the wee-little things in front of them, leaving you free to take the hulks down with your bows, crossbows etc.

hope this helps

Very helpful Andrew.

About witch kings strategy - skeletons are immune to confusion so use them as your fodder. They wont do much of course, but its better than a horde of confused goblins.

Ahem well yes.I'd suggest if you can get a a high monster summoning spell scroll or if you have one and use it.Those Umber Hulks are annoying.put you fighters in front to attack the umber hulks, put the healers behing them, put the spell behind the healers, and put your archers in the back. That's mainly what I do for tougher battles.Heh

Umber hulks are particularly susceptible to cloudkill. Invis/stealth a thief to scout where the umber hulks are. Move your mage up and cast CK just before the nearest umber hulk (so that they don't see your mage). Wait - the umber hulks should start dropping like flies.
Repeat if necessary.

Andrewas has the gist of it right. The Chaotic commands spell is the best defense. Summoned undead are particularly useful for a shield as they are not affected by the umber hulk gaze.
