The spear IS cursed, and for some reason does not exist in the game at all--the only way to get it is to CLUA it in. I don't know why the designers chose to leave it out, adding more weird items like Backbiter adds to the variety. Other 'nonexistent' items include the Helm of Charm Protection and a pair of unenchanted Bracers.

Weird. So why do the designers come up with a weapon like that and then leave it out? BTW, does anyone know where the Helms of Defence and Opposite Alignment are?

The Helmet of Defense does exist quite legally, but I'm not going to say where. Do the legwork and earn it yourself--you'll feel better for it, trust me. It's actually easy enough to find, if you're the kind that likes to go everywhere & do everything. You'll have to fight for it, but what did you expect?
The Helm of Opposite Alignment also can be obtained without cheating, but it is sooooo difficult. If you have ToSC, the Helm is worn by the Demonknight when he's on the ground floor. Good Luck! I've done it--ONCE.

The DemonKnight? I've finished Durlags' Tower and killed him by using the Mirror of Opposition, then finishing him off after he killed his double. He only had a Shield +1 and Soultaker on him, I think. So maybe I have to kill him without the Mirror of Opposition?

I'm glad I'm not the only one to be astounded by the difficulty of killing him on the 1st floor. Does anyone have any tactics/strategies?
