Ever since I bought and played this game (pretty much on the day of release), I suffered from an annoying problem. I began to suspect that there was no fight music for encounters (aka BG fight music) but when I got to the Vale of Shade I discovered my error, there is fight music but I can only hear it whilst slaughtering yetis and lesser shades above ground on that particular map only, this was almost as bad as their being no random encounters between mapsites in IWD or BG2! What ever happened to "You are waylaid by enemies and must defend yourself" ? If anyone knows of a solution to the fight music problem (what I did get to hear of it sounded quite good) please let me know. As it is I have fallen back on reloading old saves in that region and pausing for rediculously long times during encounters in order to be able to hear it all. I'm using the UK version and was wandering if it was anything wrong with the CD or my Computer or the version. The music files all installed themselves but they just won't play unless their backing tracks.

Well, I am using the U.S. version, but perhaps this will also apply to your game. Try running the configuration utility and adjusting the music volume slider to the maximum setting.

I found this old thread Balgin, might be of use. I don't get much music either so I'm going to try it to.

You absoloutly deffinetly DO! have random encounters in BG2. As for the IWD fight music, I don't know as I always turn it off anyway I prefur not to have it on. But that Kuldahar music is great.

I must dissagree with you on principle Hesperex. When I referred to the lack of wandering monster encounters in BG2 I only meant the ones between mapsites. I have also played BG2 to the point of boredom and got fed up of having to rest if I wanted to see wandering monsters and the fact that it was a pretty naff sequal. Sir Tainly, I've tried that patch and it did absolutely nothing! At least not for my version. I've fiddled with the in game settings, the out of game configuration utility and tried all sorts. This patch might have sorted out other peoples problems but if so then I seem to have had only half the problem they had. The patch (re)imported some of the battle music files but they still don't play. I don't know about having the latest driver versions for my sound card but they're newer than IWD (I got a new computer recently but I had the same problem with previous sound card).

Things wich I didn't like about BG2: the fact that the 3d character graphics flipped handedness, strangely teleporting shields between hands etc whenever facing different directions, the way that enemy NPC spellcasters where allowed to pull off lightning fast contingencies in order to cast the whole gammut of defensive spells (okay, so I'm exagerating a bit here but not much), the fact that the designers had ignored the integral workings of the clone spell (the clone is supposed to be at 60% effectiveness and compulsively hunt down and kill the original, not clone itself to make encounters even harder) and over all two new camp dialogue lines of Minsc (" Boo is so very little and there is so much of Minsc to search" and " A den of stinking evil, Boo and I shall leave no crevasse unsearched!").
Things that I did like about BG2: EVERYTHING ELSE. "To the point of boredom" above applied only to boredom of that particularly challenging vampire (challenging for a 9th level party anyway). I suppose the fact that the game almost required me to play like a scatter brained moron accidentally completing all side quests in order to be able to defeat major NPC's slightly ticked me off. I got so bored of that vampire (name began with a "B") that I went off and murdered the Red Dragon (complete with accompannying dungeon)in order to gain sufficient power to overcome the nightspawn. I otherwise absolutely loved the game and will probably start playing it again sometime. ------------------ Balgin, the Dwarf |
