chain contingency question

afteer all this time i'm taking my first forays into high-level arcane spell casting in my current game

i'm having fun preparing for known upcoming dragon battles with

chain contingency (enemy sighted - nearest enemey) - pierce shield - ADHW - ADHW

my question is that it doesn't always seem to fire straight away

take the dragon near the elf city - i load up and head into battle - the dragon turns hostile - my mage just stands there waiting for something to happen, my inquisitor bashes away for a bit - my fighter/druid casts insect plague and bashes a bit too - my mage gets wing buffeted away - recovers walks back into the fight (i'm thinking i've done the contingency wrong by now) and then if fires -> near death closely followed by dead

i know that's not a detailed enough post for proper diagnosis but what are people's experience of this spell - does it delay triggering sometimes? or what?

I think it triggers only when a hostile npc enters line of sight, not when an npc turns from neutral to hostile (blue to red). In that case you/enemy have to exit and re-enter the los.

and ironically means that wing buffeting my mage was t___'s downfall

Ouch…an area attack spell while your teammates are in the line of fire?

On a related note: what part of magic resistance would come into play with hitting a dragon with two ADHW’s
True the pierce shield will chop that magic resistance down a bit…

No worries, Irondragon, ADHW only hurts enemies.

yeah dragons have a longer range than mages.. so just bring him closer .. not too close though
