I'm going to give that no reloads thing another shot, but this time I will only start in BG2. I am trying to figure out the ways characters can be instantly killed. Please help me formulate a list here. My theory is that I can easily put together a party of 5 NPCs to handle all of the game, but I want to make a Protagonist that is most likely to avoid instant death.

I can think of:

Charm (I'm pretty sure the Protagonist getting charmed instantly ends the game)
Imprisonment

Charm only ends the game if the whole party is charmed. The protagonist can be charmed as long as there is someone else left game won't end.

Here is a complete list of how you can end your game (from SoA only, ToB not included):

Protagonist:
*Health reaches 0
*Petrification
*Imprisonment
*Finger of death, Power word kill etc... Instant death spells
*Level drained to 0
*Taking the Rift device from the sewers
*Going to fight Irenicus in spellhold without help
*Str drain to 0 from undead
*Int drain to 0 from Mind Flayers
*Cha drain to 0 from ugly stick (Rod of Terror)
*Betraying the Shadow thieves, having allied with them
*Betraying Bodhi, having allied with her
*Vorpal hit from own party member
*Demi Lich Howl

In addition the game ends if:
*Whole party charmed
*Whole party mazed

Also:
When exiting the maze under spellhold, entering the soul transferring machine room, Irenicus will instantly kill the PC.

Also, using a certain ability gained in a certain chapter for too long will also kill you.

I once managed to kill my main character and still continue the game, but that was in BG1 and has probably been fixed.

But on the actual topic, if you want to give the PC out of trouble, just give him the Boots of Speed and "run away from all" AI. *I hear that is very succesful against most forms of enemy strategies.

Two additions, and a few errata.

Disintegrate.

In the "Test of the Spirit" section of Watcher's Keep, if the Spirit Warrior dies, so do you.

Betraying the SThieves in Chapter 3 doesn't necessarily kill you, it just makes it impossible to continue in the game. Arkanis Gath can be "beaten," but since siding with Aran makes an enemy out of Bodhi, you're stuck, unless you're playing with some mod that adds a 3rd route to Spellhold.

Any successful Vorpal hit will kill you, whether it comes from your own party or not. (The Glabrezu in ToB are very dangerous for this factor alone.)

Demilich Howl should be grouped with the other death spells.

I'm not sure, but I think the harmful side effect of using a certain ability for too long doesn't kill you outright, it simply does magical damage. Have somebody cast PfME on you and you may be good to go--but I hardly ever use this ability, so I'm not sure.

And I think it's not simply "Whole party charmed, or Whole party mazed," but rather "Every party member is either Charmed, Mazed, or dead."

Yup you're right. But "dead" is different from the other 2, because once your protagonist dies, it's game over. "Chramed" and "dazed" protagonists doesn't mean game over if there are other party members left.

And you're also right, demilich howl should be grouped with other death spells, but then so should disintegrate.
Only petrification and imprisonment should be classified separately because they are different. Characters hit by them are not dead but (unless it is protagonist) can be brought back with stone to flesh or freedom scrolls respectively.
All other spells kill. Whether it is through death spell, disintegration, or that beauty druid spell, the fact remains: your character is no longer alive.

Six, I just tried it... PfME didn't protect from it, and though I took damage, it was never enough to kill me. I just died after a minute or so, and not from damage.

Who really uses that ability EVER, except maybe against a few demi-liches and in some Illithids house? Even then, it's not really needed.
