Believe it or not, this is my best party yet:

Me - Halfling Thief
Minsc
Kivan
Xan
Imoin - 3rd level thief / 5th level conjurer
Coran

...Don't know if it is just that I am getting a lot better at combat or what, but this group has been DOMINATING....I have been absolutely destroying every encounter that I run into...I just finished chapter 4 and am getting ready to head for the 'Gate...None of my characters has even died yet (other than Xan once or twice, but I am still having a hard time convincing myself to count him)...On "paper" this does not look like a great team, but they have definately been fighting well together!

WOW, good job Khazad

You're right....that group doesn't LOOK strong at all....on paper.

Glad to hear things worked out so good.

Minsc, Kivan, and Coran is a very powerful fighter trio. That is the backbone of the success you're seeing. Kivan and Coran can be devastating as a stealth attack team. Once their stealth ability is high enough, you can have them 1) stealth and reveal an enemy, 2) fire an arrow, 3) immediately pause and restealth, 4) fire another arrow, etc., such that they are never even seen by the enemy and everything is happening very quickly. This is entirely believable from a roleplayed point of view.

As for party composition, are you sure you don't want a healer? Imoen can handle your mage needs, so you could drop Xan. If you're entering the city now you passed up the opportunity to add Yeslick, but you could go back into Cloakwood and pick up Faldorn (although, if you're roleplaying it and didn't talk to her earlier that would be implausible). Otherwise I think Quayle is your man. Tiax is available in the city, but he is Chaotic Evil. Both Quayle and Tiax are very entertaining characters. Quayle has the better stats of the two, and it's nice having two mage spellcasters.

Lem is right, drop Xan, get Branwen(or other) and the reason you are doing well, is you have the best Tank in Minsc, and Kivan and Coran, both lethal with a bow!
