...what the heck am I supposed to be doing?!

I went down all four levels. Great puzzles, interesting challenges, a real dungeon crawl! Am I the only one who figured out the Portal Maze on the second try?

I suffered a setback thanks to game quirks. The game rarely autosaves in WK. And when I do try to save, the game tends to crash. I managed to beat the 3rd key portal protectors (the Huntress, drow, hive mother, marileth, etc.) in one try AND with all my party members intact! (And Imoen and Aizawa learn the sheer joy of time stop + improved alacrity + spell trigger/sequencer. ) Right after I won, before I had a chance to pick up any gear or level up my party members, the game decides to crash. Nothing was running except ToB, Norton, and the systray. Everything was working perfectly up until that point. Now, thanks to my Wild Mage luck, I get to fight the battle again, and knowing that luck, the results will be quite different.

[/rant]

And then, after turning off my stress reliever, it was back to work on the theater history paper about anti-fascism and Eugene Ionesco.

[/offtopic]

But while I was working, I kept thinking about my true purpose in WK. What exactly am I supposed to be doing down there, now that I'm so close to the Imprisoned One? The Chromatic Demon tipped me off that there was trickery afoot, but should I trust a lying demon? Also, Aizawa's husband-to-be is a follower of Helm. I'm trying to think what would be best for Helm, but I don't know what to do.

If the Imprisoned One is imprisoned, reading the scroll is going to do one of two things: it will work and reseal its bonds, or it won't work and I'll have a fight on my hands. My PC is chaotic good, and does what is best for her party members before thinking of herself.

Can anyone help me out here? Please keep in mind that I don't know anything about the Imprisoned One except that he/she/it/genderless entity is down there, and the only information I'm going on is what people tell me and what my journal says. Easy on the spoilers, please.

couple of choices you have and their possible outcomes .. you decide what your character would choose ( no spoilers ) :

- You fight The Imprisoned One ( IO ) and win, woohooo !
result : It might be dead, but also not imprisoned anymore. Something tough enough for Helm to barely beat and imprison in a huge Dungeon might not consider death the ultimate setback ... I mean, you wont be able to kill Helm on this plain either, only just send him back to his own plane of existence.
It'd might be something to consider ...

- You fight IO and loose !
result : rather obvious

- You restrenghten the seals !
result: ASSUMING that it works, It'll be once again imprisoned for a very long time .. this time you know for sure it wont do any harm opposed to the "Killing him" -tactic which might send such a powerfull creature back to his own plane ( if it has one ) ...

Newayz,.. its just speculation. Dont worry, all will become clear

NOTE: DO make a permanent savegame before going to face IO ...
It'll prove worthwhile if you ever want to know all the possible outcomes

Just go down there and talk to it, and the best thing to do is to do what it tells you to do ( ).

The original Dem.. err, Imprisoned One should be easy enough for you to fight, but in case you have the Ascenison Mod installed, then I suggest you just restrengthen the seals.

As for the game crashing, I have extensive experience in that area. If you have the Debug Code in the game, then usually it'll crash on you.

Killing The Imprisoned One and then talking to the knights of Helm does net you the most experience of all alternatives, just so you know

Well, here's what happened.

The second bout with the Big Five went a lot easier. This time I remembered to stuff a Spell Trigger with LR/LR/Maze to put the Hive Mother away for a while before taking out the rest of them with 2 Chain Contingencies filled with ADHW and a couple light taps from some +5 weapons. They never had a chance. And I wasn't about to give them one.

My intrepid party faced the Voice From the Void. Things seemed to be going pretty well. Innocence trapped. The Chromatic Demon tipped me off that the Knights were lying about something. Not that I'm going to take a hellspawn's word over a knight of Helm's, but its advice was something to keep in mind. Then the hidden voice mentioned power and riches through my heritage. My heritage means slaughtering people for fun and profit. You think you can tempt me with that, eh? Show yourself!

No wonder he talked to me while invisible. I think if I saw its true form I would have laughed by butt off severely overestimated it. The size of the chamber, the statue on the top floor, and the statue back in the Kuo-Toan lair made me think of something more fierce. "Know that you are about to face a carnival attraction" was more like it.

Took me two times to return it to the Abyss whence it came. The first time, he shot some sort of damage spell to Aizawa and managed to charm Anomen, and thanks to a critical hit from Crom Fayer, he slew his wife-to-be. Second time, Imoen got tagged with the dire charm, but also got three Symbols shot at her and chose the lesser of three evils: Symbol Fear.

Anyway, we solved the problem, and went back to the knights of Helm, and let them live, even though they chickened out. We're a nice party like that. I've been extrapolating alternate endings ever since, but no option so far has a satisfactory wrap-up. Each way of solving the problem ends on a sour note. Maybe it's just me wanting a happy ending, or at least one where justice is served...

With all respect for the people who wrote it, I'm not a big fan of the Tactics mod because the game can be made challenging without it. The Imprisoned One seemed easy to me because I had a powerplaying party (Anomen, Keldorn, Minsc, Jaheira, and Imoen). It was another case of "ho-hum, 3 ADHW in the Chain Contingency and 3 LR in the Sequencer." Anything in the game can fall to that. But now that I know how to make this game more challenging, I can build a party to suit.

Minor gripe: highlight for Bhaalspawn #4 spoilers: *I resolved to beat Draconis and Abizagal without using level 6-9 mage spells or 6-7 priest spells. Took me about 16 reloads with big D and a grand total of 29 with big A. And what do I get for my trouble? Bracers for a monk I don't have, plate with obsolete resistances and AC, and a flail head for a weapon I don't have proficiency points in. Grr!*
