What exactly is the function of the charisma stat in relation to the game? I know, of course, the purpose in tabletop gaming, but I haven't noticed it to have an effect one way or another in the BG series.

It affects, along with reputation, the prices you have to pay in stores. Also, I've heard somewhere that for Clerics it gives a bonus to Turn Undead, but personally I'm not too sure about that.

If it's really high or really low, NPC's may give you more or less of a reward, be kinder or more hostile. In BG1 for example you could 'work' for Silke. A chaaracter with a regular charisma would be payed 300 gold for the job, one with a low charisma 200 and if your main character had a charisma of 18 you'd get 400 gold. The same goes in the other games in the series too, even if it is not always obvious and never a big bonus or penalty.

It also holds your party together. Lets say you are good and have high rep, but wants that ass kicking Edwin to stay in your party. Well, then high char shuold do the trick

Also good for morale checks. If your leader has a high chr then it is less likely that other party members will be affected by fear.
